How To Make Your Own Stormtrooper Helmet

Storm Troopers, hate them or love them, this is a fun endeavor for any Star Wars Freak. When I saw the home made storm trooper helmet, I just had to try it out myself. Sadly, it didn’t look nearly as awesome as the clever Mom of two girls over at Filth Wizardry.

Either way, it reminded me of the very hilarious scene from How I Met Your Mother when Marshall punched Barney’s Storm trooper’s head clean off, after they found out how insensitive he has been to Robyn. Since then, I can’t get flying milk bottles out of my mind. Anyhow, if you are interested in making your own Storm Trooper helmet, I’ll walk you through the steps.

All you will need is two milk jugs, preferably the gallon type. Two, because you need to cut different bits from both bottles. As you can see from the image below, you need to cut Piece A and Piece B from the first bottle, and Piece C from the second bottle. Cut slightly bigger pieces if you want to use it for yourself. The lady over at Filth Wizardry made the helmet for her 4 and 6 year old daughters, so it might be a tiny bit to small for an adult head.

Next you’ll need some hot glue to put everything together. I used a South African brand of glue, Bostick, and that worked like a charm. Piece A is the “jaw” part of the helmet, the lower part and the sides. Position Piece C on top of Piece A as seen in the image, and glue it securely at the edges. It works best if you put a little bit of glue all around the edges of Piece C; and add more glue as you go, if needed. The circle, Piece B, fits nicely in the circular indentation of Piece C.

Once everything is glued together, punch a whole on each of the “side panels” of Piece A. You also need to measure where the eye holes are going to be, because the Storm Trooper’s eyes wont be practical if the mask is made for a child. With some clever painting, you can easily hide the eye holes.

As far as decorating it goes, you can either use acrylic paint or white spray paint. Spray paint is the quickest, but I found acrylics to give a more textured finished. Then, take a bit of electrical tape, or black masking tape, and place it above the Stormtroopers eyes as you can see in the image below. I used gray paint and a black permanent marker for the rest of the designs.

Now, all you need to do is go through your wardrobe and find a white vest and wear it over a black long sleeved polo neck or turtle neck, and you’re good to go! Or, alternatively, check out 17 Transformer Costume Ideas and Alien Vs Predator Mask for more design ideas.
