It’s rare to see 2D, by hand big budget animated films these days, but it’s hard to argue that they still hold a very captivating sort of magic to them, part of it thanks to the nostalgia factor working overtime when we encounter something reminding us of our childhood.

Like these pencil test drawings for Disney films like Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. Besides being gorgeous to look at, they pinch at your heart a little bit because of the reasons mentioned above.

Disney Princesses as League of Legends characters: LoL indeed http://walyou.com/disney-princesses-as-league-of-legends-characters-lol-indeed/ http://walyou.com/disney-princesses-as-league-of-legends-characters-lol-indeed/#comments Fri, 03 Jul 2015 19:56:39 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=216925

See what Disney princesses have to say when they’ve had enough of “cute” things and get their game on with the almightily popular League of Legends.

A digital artist known as Elasar Reem, who goes by Dreeners at DeviantArt has created a series of fan art pictures, reimagining some of the most well-known leading ladies in Disney movies as badass League of Legends (LoL) characters.

This series works particularly well as the author based her creations on both color gamma and likeness to give life to these LoL variants. Bows, guns and swords round out each one of the princesses exquisitely crafted outfits, and some of them are truly the work of genius. We’d like to watch a movie starring all of these characters in these outfits… Anyways, enjoy the pictures in this story, for our words could not do them justice..

The only ones we had some trouble telling who they were originally supposed to be are Helen & Violet (Pixar’s The Incredibles) and Tarzan’s Jane. How about you?

A Nintendo Gem: the big N shows the first hand-drawn Super Mario level http://walyou.com/hand-drawn-super-mario-level/ http://walyou.com/hand-drawn-super-mario-level/#comments Mon, 29 Jun 2015 19:00:42 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=216862

Fans and critics agree that Nintendo didn’t have the greatest E3 event this year, but at least a beautiful piece of art shown in it filled us with nostalgia. Master creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Donkey Kong, Zelda and Super Mario Bros explained during a presentation on the new Super Mario maker how the plumber’s levels were created way back when, in graph paper.

30 years ago, creating a Super Mario Bros level was not the same process as it is now, and game creators had to get creative. The upcoming Wii U title Mario Maker is, partly, an homage to those early days of the plumber – but the point was truly driven home when they showed these extremely detailed designs that are an extremely valuable relic from the olden days by now.

Miyamoto explained that back in the day, in order to create the Mario levels they used graph paper, which were then shown to the programmers and designers. If there were any errors, they had to go back to these graphs, and mark the modifications they were supposed to make.

“changes had to be minimal because of the design and code limitations. Once a level had been built, it wasn’t that easy to modify it. The “magic” and personality of each of the mythical Super Mario levels has a really simple beginning”, explained Miyamoto.

Miyamoto also mentioned that part of the design just came from drawing levels that he’d just like to play himself, by just letting himself go on pure impulse and creativity. The big exception was the first level of the game, which was thought of as a tutorial for the rest of the game, where they spent several hours thinking and designing each of the elements. The idea was to throw the play into a playground where they would intuitively figure out the game mechanics based on what they saw. The goombas and mushroom placement on the levels were very deliberate, for example: the mushroom is hard to avoid and the goombas, designed so the player would instantly figure out he had to either eliminate them or get out of their way.

Mario Maker is a simplification of those years. With tools that ease the creation of levels via both software and hardware (the Wii U control is perfect for this), the idea is to turn the player into Shigeru Miyamoto and unleash their creativity.

Unrealistic beauty standards? These are actually realistic looking Disney characters – that happen to remain as gorgeous as their animation counterparts.

What you see above are a few out of the several match ups artis Karen Graw created, by turning Disney’s characters faces into actual, human faces. All of them extremely good looking.

The project “Real Disney Character Faces” shows the human face of characters such as Rapunzel, Tiana, Pocahontas, Cinderella and other princesses, princes, and villains from the classic movies. The images accompanying this post are the creationg of the Hufftington Post, who organized these for proper comparison.

Google Spotlight Stories adds more supported devices http://walyou.com/google-spotlight-stories-adds-more-supported-devices/ http://walyou.com/google-spotlight-stories-adds-more-supported-devices/#comments Fri, 05 Jun 2015 20:24:28 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=216653

Google Spotlight Stories, the interactive storytelling app has just added a new wave of supported Android devices.

This app, acquired by Google after the Motorola buyout is based on taking advantage of the smartphones’ features to tell interactive stories. And while it might still be in trial stages, there already are quite a few interesting tales and features to see there. When it started, it only had support for Motorola devices running on Android 4.3 or higher, although without any warranties that it actually would run – once installed, users might just as well get a message saying that their device is still incompatible.

At first there were only three stories to see, but the Spotlight team just added a fourth one titled “help”, by Justin Lin (from Fast & Furious), and is available for free for a limited period. The idea is that these stories will eventually be sold for a price, and even then there are rumors that the service could use a membership like Netflix or Spotify.

Check out the next video to see how the Spotlight team develop their stories, with comments by Jon Klassen, who was one of the visual artists in Kung Fu Panda 2.

The Spotlight Player can be downloaded from Google Play following this link, and under the “install” button, users will learn whether their device is compatible or not. The current version is v1.8b22p8, weighs some 20 megabytes and is free.

Kinect-Powered PomPom Mirror Highlights Fluffiness http://walyou.com/kinect-powered-pompom-mirror/ http://walyou.com/kinect-powered-pompom-mirror/#comments Fri, 29 May 2015 16:00:09 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=216581

Snow White’s stepmother would have a hard time finding out who’s the fairest of them all, as everyone’s reflection in this Kinect-powered mirror looks equally fluffy.

New York artist Daniel Rozin seems to have developed an obsession for mirrors, considering that most of his portfolio focuses on them. His latest creation, simply titled PomPom Mirror, might convince you that Rozin is not a big fan of sharpness. The contraption makes use of a Kinect sensor, motors and plenty of faux fur pom poms to create fluffy reflections of whoever stands in front of it.

Obviously, the effect couldn’t have been achieved with a small number of faux fur pom poms and motors. With that in mind, Rozin employed 464 motors that turn 928 spherical puffs from beige to black depending on what motion is captured by the Kinect sensor.

People’s reaction to seeing this concept is preponderantly positive, with some of them even wanting to sleep on this mirror. Well, the surface definitely wouldn’t suffice, but maybe that’s what people should suggest Rodin to try in this future projects: a full length mirror that doubles as a fluffy mattress when not in use. After all, the ladies may want to admire their dresses, and the current PomPom Mirror cannot encompass their entire length.

The Kinect sensor tracks the people standing in front of the mirror and sends the data to a microcontroller that, in turn, flips the motors to determine the change in color. The reflection appears in real-time, but don’t expect instant reactions. After all, something as fluffy as this mirror shouldn’t make sudden moves, as they would contradict the whole concept. One might argue that the fluffy mirror has a life of its own, and if you’re considering its aspect and motion, you wouldn’t be that far from the truth.

In case the above video isn’t enough for you, and you happen to be in the Big Apple these days, don’t hesitate to visit the Descent with Modification artworks exhibition. Rozin’s PomPom Mirror is currently showcased there, and can be tested by any of the visitors. The exhibition runs through July 1, 2015, so don’t miss your chance of witnessing a completely unique form of art. Unique and fluffy, that is.

Finally, the second Avengers film is coming out, and in celebration of the glorious occasion, we thought about assembling the bestest fan art out there in honor of the comic book group in its cinematic splendor.

While the core group, at least in the movies, consists of Iron Man (Tony Stark), Captain America (Steve Rogers), The Hulk (Bruce Banner), Black Widow (Natalia Romanova), Hawkeye (Clint Barton) and Thor (Thor), in the second installment of Marvel’s magnum opus we’ll see some changes, which means additions.

Game of Thrones pancakes: stab & eat http://walyou.com/game-of-thrones-pancakes/ http://walyou.com/game-of-thrones-pancakes/#comments Fri, 17 Apr 2015 20:45:41 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=216038

Show your house allegiance by literally eating your enemies! These Game of Thrones inspired pancakes with house sigils are the best in Westeros.

YouTuber Nathan Shield is the real world’s Hotpie: he created an incredible video where he uses his best baking and cooking skills to create some pancakes and hotcakes inspired by the house sigils of the different families from HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones. You can check them out on the video below these lines, and even follow these instructions yourselves to create them.

After how hard Hot Pie worked on creating that Stark wolf for Arya at the end of Season 4, it’s criminal that Brienne straight up never brought it up during her brief encounter with the youngest of the Stark gals – so anyone who is good at baking, let’s make it our life goal to send a few of these to Maisie Williams, ok? We are pretty sure she (or her character) would appreciate it.
