Esty Shop BurntPixels’s Pac-Man Light Box http://walyou.com/esty-shop-burntpixelss-pac-man-light-box/ http://walyou.com/esty-shop-burntpixelss-pac-man-light-box/#comments Tue, 07 Oct 2014 14:00:49 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179862

Eat away the dark in your home with this Pac-Man light box.

When it comes to fine-looking ornaments of the geeky persuasion, let Christina’s Etsy store BurntPixel fill that dark corner of your heart with one of her handcrafted light boxes. One of her newest lamps available is based on Japanese video game publisher Namco’s legendary arcade ghost eater, Pac-Man, and looks absolutely smashing.

Crafted from of laser-cut MDF, the Pac-Man light box is a 6 inch gloss black cube, featuring Pac-Man himself and his rainbow-colored specter pals. In a creative twist, the colors shining from the light box don’t emit from the light source – in this case is just a simple AAA battery-powered LED – but from the cut-outs themselves.

The overall effect is a simple, echoing illumination that feels almost similar to the classic 1980 game in motion. Thankfully, you won’t be needing an endless amount of quarters to enjoy it.

Right now you can purchase the Pac-Man light box from BurntPixels, a wonderful addition to a gaming den or bedroom, for the starting unassembled price of $50.00 USD; Add five more dollars to that price if you wish for full assembly and added shipping costs.

Artist Has Robot Printing His Selfie with Blood http://walyou.com/artist-has-robot-printing-his-selfie-with-blood/ http://walyou.com/artist-has-robot-printing-his-selfie-with-blood/#comments Thu, 04 Sep 2014 20:47:32 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179132

Oh, the things people do for the sake of art! Brooklyn-based artist Ted Lawson had a robot draw a selfie of him with blood as the medium.

The robot-printed blood selfie (does it still qualify as a selfie if it’s shot – or in this case, printed – by someone else?) will be part of the artist’s The Map Is Not the Territory (named after a concept used in NLP) exhibition, which will open on September 11 at the Joseph Gross Gallery in NYC. It should be noted that Lawson didn’t plan on using blood as the medium for his selfie (and no, the robot didn’t tie him to a chair in order to extract blood from him, you know, for art), but something must have

The good thing about printers in general, and the CNC milling machine that was used for this art project in particular, is that they don’t use a lot of ink (erm… blood) to put the symbols on paper. Otherwise, the artist would have ended in an ER rather than at his own exhibition. The paintbrush that’s handled by CNC’s robotic arm

To make things even weirder, Lawson pointed out that the selfie is actually a nude picture of himself. He proceeded to turning the photograph into code that the milling machine can understand, and the robot went to turn the code into a pixelated selfie.

Everything started as an experiment, though. Lawson placed a pen in CNC’s arm one day and how well the drawing ended up being: “I was doing a drawing of the moon and thought, “Oh, this could be really cool to do in my own blood. It was a logical progression.” Most sane artists would think otherwise, as it’s a long way from ink to blood. It’s not as if Lawson would be the first artist to use “secretions magnifiques” (yes, that really is a perfume created by Etat Libre d’Orange) for painting.

After finishing the work of art Lawson had to apply an acrylic preservative on it so that it doesn’t rot. Had he used normal paints, he obviously wouldn’t have had such problems, but in that case he probably wouldn’t have made the news, either. It would be interesting to see the public’s reaction after attending the exhibition.

12 Superheroes at Their Loneliest http://walyou.com/lonely-superheroes/ http://walyou.com/lonely-superheroes/#comments Fri, 15 Aug 2014 13:00:27 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=178288

From the fortress of Solitude, to the Batcave or even Peter Parker’s slimy bachelor’s pad, Superheroes, be it in costume or their alter-ego, need their alone time to decompress. This fantastic series of photos shows them (or people dressed like them) at their loneliest moments out in the wild, away from the pressures of saving the world.

Spider-Man sitting on an empty road

The Batman of Notre Dame

Or just in some cave

Superman up North

Or “stranded” on a tiny island

The creator of this series is French artist Benoit Lapray. According to him, this might be Superheroes on a quest, but a quest to find themselves.

Or up on a Cliff

And getting away from there

Wolverine in the wild

Captain America up some hill

Flash-ing through the fields

Thor in the Woods

Woder Woman in some lake

Or some waterfall

Iron-Man is here too

And so is the Silver Surfer

Hulk loves being one with nature

Catwoman hiding somewhere

Space Invaders toilet paper holder is out of this world http://walyou.com/space-invaders-toilet-paper-holder/ http://walyou.com/space-invaders-toilet-paper-holder/#comments Thu, 14 Aug 2014 14:00:07 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=178284

We are lucky to live in a time where retro never goes out of style. Space Invaders now look at home everywhere, even in the bathrooms of your house thanks to the magic of 3d printing.

An Etsy user by the name of Taj Mahalo came up with this neat concept for 3-D printing enthusiasts with a soft spot for 80s gaming: a 3-D printed Space Invaders toilet paper holder that you can get for $20 USD. The holder sports the look of one of the many space invaders, but even though there will be only one in your bathroom, it will just remain static instead of going faster and faster until it makes you lose.

Comic-book anti-hero beers: feels good to be bad http://walyou.com/comic-book-anti-hero-beers-feels-good-to-be-bad/ http://walyou.com/comic-book-anti-hero-beers-feels-good-to-be-bad/#comments Wed, 13 Aug 2014 13:00:29 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=178257

Let’s face it, it’s the heroes that are not actually heroic 100% of the time the ones that we like the most. Here’s an (alcoholic) tribute to them.

These bottles are the creation of Butcher Billy, who already has made quite a name for his uncanny creativity. This time around, he has created a collection which he called “Comic Book Super Drunk Hangout”, in which we see beer bottles themed after some of Marvel & DC’s greatest anti-heroes… amongst others.

There’s no Superman or Captain America here: this collection is for the true badasses, the likes of Deadpool, Wolverine, Marv, Hellboy, The Comedian and others. Be sure to check the initial link to get the entire set!

Self-assembling origami robots are among us http://walyou.com/self-assembling-origami-robots-are-among-us/ http://walyou.com/self-assembling-origami-robots-are-among-us/#comments Mon, 11 Aug 2014 12:00:56 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=177961

The relaxing, ancestral art of Origami has received its biggest revolution since its inception: now it assembles itself. Sure, this kills most of the romanticism about it, but it is quite a sight to behold.

A group of robotics researchers have come up with a way to create a unique brand of robots: origami figures that autonomously self assembling and roaming around. As if inspired by Transformers, capable of disguising themselves becoming regular vehicles, these robots instead turn into origami figures. Careful, they might be hiding amongst your paper cranes and bunnies.

The footage uploaded by the team shows a couple of batteries and motors folfing the paper into classic origami figures without any human involvement. The robots do move on their own, and use “shape memory polymers” that contract when heated. It takes it about four minutes to fully transform from scratch, so, luckily, you’ll be able to spot them. You know, before they enslave you.

You can see the process unfold right below these lines.

Awesome Springfield Recreation With Lego http://walyou.com/springfield-recreation-with-legoawesome-springfield-recreation-with-lego/ http://walyou.com/springfield-recreation-with-legoawesome-springfield-recreation-with-lego/#comments Fri, 08 Aug 2014 12:00:23 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=177841

After we saw the Master Builders in The Lego Movie and the Brick Like Me episode on The Simpsons, it’s only natural we’ll get a perfect recreation of Springfield in brick form.

Matt De Lanoy is obviously a fan, and he took the town (or city?) of Springfield, somewhere USA, and turned it into a complete Lego set.

We have Homer (in the Nuclear power plant after probably doing something wrong) and Bart hugging the statue he once decapitated with a saw, and most importantly we have every landmark – from Moe’s Tavern to the elementary school and the Kwik-E-Mart among other important spots that make Springfield and The Simpsons such a wonderful place.
