It may seem odd for a manufacturer of kitchen appliances to get inspiration for the design of their products from such cryptids as the Loch Ness Monster, but OTOTO Design appears to have hit a gold mine with their Mamma Nessie colander .

The Mamma Nessie colander comes a few months after the Nessie ladle made waves on the Web. The reason behind the naming is quite simple: due to its similar shape and larger dimensions, the colander spoon looks much like a nest for the ladle, and the two are spectacular together.

OTOTO, the design studio that came up with the idea of creating all sorts of funny-looking kitchen gadgets, realized that most products found in stores nowadays have a pretty dull aspect. Young people, in particular, could benefit from colorful appliances and innovative designs, as it’s nothing more depressing than to cook in a black and inox environment.

Measuring 12x11x29 cm, Mamma Nessie is entirely made out of plastic. Personally, I would have preferred silicone, as it withstands much higher temperatures. However, given its purpose and the fact it mostly comes in contact with boiling water, the colander spoon should be safe.

The dimensions of the spoon make Mamma Nessie adequate for boiled vegetables, but short pasta is also an option to consider. As far as I can tell, the colander spoon won’t play well with spaghetti or tagliatelle, so if you’re looking for a tool to handle these, you should probably check the other products from OTOTO’s portfolio.

Mamma Nessie is currently being sold by SOHO Design Shop for $18.90, in two color options: green and turquoise. A purple version isn’t yet available, but considering that the ladle comes in this color, it shouldn’t take long until Mamma is dressed in it, too. In time, this colander spoon might be sold by more stores, but for the time being, the green version is exclusive to SOHO.

It is also possible to buy the Nessie set, which includes the colander spoon and the ladle. This way, you get to add a touch of color to your kitchen, while also saving some money, as getting the two separately costs more. Sets of differently colored Mamma Nessies should be available soon, considering that ladle sets are already being sold.

Game of Thrones pancakes: stab & eat http://walyou.com/game-of-thrones-pancakes/ http://walyou.com/game-of-thrones-pancakes/#comments Fri, 17 Apr 2015 20:45:41 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=216038

Show your house allegiance by literally eating your enemies! These Game of Thrones inspired pancakes with house sigils are the best in Westeros.

YouTuber Nathan Shield is the real world’s Hotpie: he created an incredible video where he uses his best baking and cooking skills to create some pancakes and hotcakes inspired by the house sigils of the different families from HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones. You can check them out on the video below these lines, and even follow these instructions yourselves to create them.

After how hard Hot Pie worked on creating that Stark wolf for Arya at the end of Season 4, it’s criminal that Brienne straight up never brought it up during her brief encounter with the youngest of the Stark gals – so anyone who is good at baking, let’s make it our life goal to send a few of these to Maisie Williams, ok? We are pretty sure she (or her character) would appreciate it.

Xbox One burgers being sold in China http://walyou.com/xbox-one-burgers/ http://walyou.com/xbox-one-burgers/#comments Thu, 26 Feb 2015 19:21:20 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=215395

Forget about the food chains you know, now it’s all about getting sandwiches themed after the consoles you like – and if the one you picked was the Xbox One, you need to see what the Chinese did.

Console wars, food wars, war, war never changes. What does change is our dietary preferences and now we absolutely feel like having an Xbox One themed burger, like the ones you can currently buy in China.

These are the first few leaked pictures of the official Xbox One burger, a product of Microsoft and the Chinese fast food chain Triple-O’s. These stores will be open in Hong Kong throughout March, and will not only sell food but also have dedicated space to the console and the games themselves, now that consoles are being sold again in China after many, many years.

The burger itself is not a special burger, but the regular Chicken Supreme Burger from the chain with special sauce and Xbox One packaging – but they really drive the point home by theming the entire restaurant after Microsoft’s console, with the entire business dressed in green and Xbox logos on the tables.

Anyone getting an Xbox One in China in the next few weeks will be also getting a special coupon for a burger, although you can buy the burger without having to get a console first if you just walk into the store.

This is the same marketing technique Activision uses in the west with select chains and their Call of Duty promotions, yet it’s a first for China, and the first time a console maker does it themselves as far as we are aware. Now we want a Triple-O in our area so we can try these…

Star Wars Pancakes Make for a Yummy & Geeky Breakfast http://walyou.com/star-wars-pancakes-geeky-breakfast/ http://walyou.com/star-wars-pancakes-geeky-breakfast/#comments Wed, 25 Feb 2015 15:00:26 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=215351

What is one to do when he tries to combine his fetish for great breakfasts and his love for Star Wars? Why, make Star Wars pancakes of course.

One might call Nathan Shields the best pop culture pancake artist in the world. The way he does it? It actually seems quite easy, although from personal experience, it requires more than just the ingredients and a frying pan. It requires talent, something I don’t have.

This Millennium Falcon cake is a geek dream come true http://walyou.com/cake-millennium-falcon/ http://walyou.com/cake-millennium-falcon/#comments Mon, 16 Feb 2015 17:12:26 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=215223

The most exciting part of the latest Star Wars trailer was seeing the Millennium Falcon again, and someone must have thought so too, because here it is again, in cake form.

What you see here is the product of Cup A Dee Cakes‘ hard work, an incredibly detailed replica of Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon in cake form. The cake was made for a little guy named Kaben, who was turning 6, but even Han Solo himself would start salivating at this delicious treat’s sight.

The Cup a Dee Cakes team are geniuses, and because geniuses are not greedy they’ve detailed the process in case any of you want to try your hand at it. If you decide to go for it, be sure to send us some pictures afterwards, because we would love to see.

The ship is not only accurate, featuring all cannons, cockpit and doors seen in the movie but also extra care was put in the presentation setting a black background to simulate space flight. I bet I can eat it faster than it takes to do a Kessel run.

Gingerbread Barad-dûr: the tastiest menace http://walyou.com/gingerbread-barad-dur/ http://walyou.com/gingerbread-barad-dur/#comments Tue, 23 Dec 2014 12:00:30 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=212926

Just because you’re evil doesn’t mean you get to forfeit Christmas Spirit! Sauron’s impregnable fortress, Barad-dûr, has become a delicious gingerbread house.

At 13.5 lbs of pure delicious gingerbread, this is the biggest and tastiest recreation of Sauron’s home turf, the tower of Barad-dûr as seen in The Lord of the Rings films. This is the creation of Jarno Koivula and his friend Roy, first surfaced at Turkulainen, a website of Finnish colleagues.

Your biggest worry right now might be that your own gingerbread house doesn’t look good in comparison, but hey, at least you don’t have to walk into Mordor and throw the ring in a volcano, right?

Dissected Ralph Wiggum Cake: anatomy of Ralph http://walyou.com/dissected-ralph-wiggum-cake/ http://walyou.com/dissected-ralph-wiggum-cake/#comments Fri, 07 Nov 2014 14:00:40 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=192365

In time, Ralph Wiggum has become one of the most recognizable Simpsons characters, deserving of a cake as much as the yellow family. Well, lo and behold!

What you see in here is Ralph Wiggum cake inspired in an old t-shirt design at Threadless, a website that specializes in geeky clothing. Turns out cake master Kylie Mangles of Freshly Squeez’d liked the design so much and wanted so hard to be challenged that she decided to recreate it as an awesome 3D cake. Turns out, it’s been quite a hit and her design is now making the rounds around several websites, and who can blame her? The cake looks just stunning.

Edible Growth 3D Printer Creates Intricate Snacks http://walyou.com/edible-growth-3d-printer/ http://walyou.com/edible-growth-3d-printer/#comments Tue, 14 Oct 2014 12:30:17 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=192113

We need to think outside the box when it comes to the shape of our snacks. The Edible Growth 3D printer is able to make minuscule snacks that have complex structures, in order to demonstrate the artificial side of the world we live in.

When University of Eindhoven Industrial Design student Chloe Rutzerveld built the Edible Growth 3D printer, her purpose wasn’t to show how creative people can get when making food. Instead, the device was designed as an alarm signal for anyone concerned about environmentally responsible food production.

Chloe explained the reasons that led to the creation of the Edible Growth 3D printer:

“We live in an era where food is not only grown or bred anymore, but manufactured in a laboratory setting or build with a 3D printer. These technologies influence supply chains, eating habits, preparation methods and introduce entirely new food products to the market.

Edible growth is an example of a future food product that forms a bridge between new technologies and authentic practices of growing and breeding food. Multiple layers containing seeds, spores and yeast are printed according to a personalized 3D file. Within five days the plants and fungi mature and the yeast ferments the solid inside into a liquid.

The product’s intensifying structure, scent and taste are reflected in its changing appearance. Depending on the preferred intensity, the consumer decides when to harvest and enjoy the delicious, fresh and nutrient-rich edible.”

Edible Growth isn’t exactly the first device to 3D print food, and I seriously doubt that it will be the last. While Chloe’s concept (as it isn’t available in a commercially viable form and probably never will be) is meant as part of a public awareness campaign, other designers and manufacturers of food 3D printers most probably built those devices on purpose.

Maybe this really is the future of cooking. Instead of spending countless hours in the kitchen (not always with the best results), maybe we could have any dish crosses our minds at the push of one button. Think of these devices as a precursor of the Replicator seen in Star Trek. Those people, aliens or not, certainly didn’t have to wait half an hour to eat after placing an order. Who knows, maybe restaurants will head that way, too, someday…

7 Marvel Superheroes With Their Own Comic Book Cereals http://walyou.com/marvel-superheroes-comic-book-cereal/ http://walyou.com/marvel-superheroes-comic-book-cereal/#comments Tue, 07 Oct 2014 13:00:57 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179892

Not that we need any more advertising and brand placing in our lives, but this idea of using Marvel Superheroes (and one lovable movie villain) like Iron Man, Thor, Captain American, Loki, Hulk, Groot and Deadpool on cereals boxes is incredibly cool.

The combination of Bamboota and Elliot Fernandez brought together this wonderful project, taking a very needed spin on the boxes of morning cereals.

Iron Man (Iron Bran)

Comes along with Pepper Potts, the mandarin, a lot of money and also a potential drinking problem, not to mention the Nick Fury eye patch.

Loki (Loki Charms)

Comes along with a depress Thor and also one awesome staff among other things. And speaking of his bashing brother…

Thor (Honey Nut Thorrios)

Comes along with his Avenger friends, including the useless Black Widow and Hawkeye. Ther Mjolnir as well, if you’re worthy of picking it up.

Deadpool (Deadpools)

As expected from the Merc with a Mouth, this box comes with things that go Boom!

Hulk (Gamma Snacks)

If you get these gamma snacks, you’ll also receive a Loki with a black eye, one solemn Nick Fury and maybe Gamma radiation, which usually isn’t a good thing.

Captain America (Ameri-Crunch)

You’ll be filled with Red, White and Blue emotions after biting your way through this.

Groot (Groot Loops)

How a well made film made a tree and a raccoon incredibly popular.
