Steampunk is back, and it never should’ve left! This is a Steampunk VFD wristwatch, with fantastic retro looks and modern usability

Between the Nexus and iPhones, PS4 and Xbox Ones and stuff, we got a whole new batch of gadgets, yet the steampunk mods are lacking. What happened? We used to get them so often… because we are still not ready to move on, here’s a new creation called ChronodeVFD. It’s a steampunk VFD wristwatch made by J. M. De Cristofaro, better known as “johngineer”. His blog even details the materials and building process so you can recreate your own, which sounds like a fantastic plan for a slow weekend.

Portable PS4 laptop mod: this is your destiny http://walyou.com/portable-ps4-laptop-mod-this-is-your-destiny/ http://walyou.com/portable-ps4-laptop-mod-this-is-your-destiny/#comments Thu, 16 Oct 2014 17:03:34 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=180122

Sony claimed that the PS Vita would make home console experiences enjoyable on the go, but it was actually a modder who really made it happen.

From the creator of the Xbook One, the portable Xbox One mod comes the Sony counterpart. This is a PlayStation 4 shrunk to laptop size, and is called the PlayBook 4. Taking inspiration from both the retail PS4 and Destiny PS4 bundle, the PS4 comes in two colors, black and white, with a matching controller.

Just like with the Xbook One, users can get in touch with the mod creator and get their own PlayBook 4 made for $1,095 USD if they send the console, or $1,395 if they would rather Ed bought it himself instead. Too bad the Wii U is already pretty portable thanks to its second screen, and we won’t see the Nintendo equivalent of this, right?

Castlevania Super Nintendo Console By Vadu Amka http://walyou.com/castlevania-super-nintendo/ http://walyou.com/castlevania-super-nintendo/#comments Fri, 10 Oct 2014 13:00:38 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179988

It would be a curse to not check out this spectacular-looking Castelvania SNES.

If you needed something to kickstart your Halloween excitement, then video game console-modder Vadu Amka has just the thing for you: a Super Nintendo designed after one of the most Halloween-celebrating video game series, Konami’s Castlevania.

To be precise, the action game franchise that rose to popularity at the height of the NES, was more of a love letter to the classic monster movies of the 1930s and 1940s from American movie maker, Universal Studios. But seeing how Halloween owes so much of its modern iconagraphy to those films, the two just can’t be separated.

As for Vadu’s spooky creation, the Castlevania SNES – also know as the Dracula’s Curse edition, named after the second game in the series – is a great spittin’ representation of all that makes Castlevania… uh, Castlevania-y?!

First, it looks like a breakable block from the game, the kind you can break and find a whole roasted chicken in (gross, but it’s better than dying), with skeleton skull and coffin in tow. And notably, it features the two most prominent fixtures in all of Castlevania, Dracula’s castle and the famed, evil-banishing whip belonging to the Belmont Family.

Lest I forget to mention that SNES controller, which looks darn close to weathered wood, and has some nice bronze decorating that alines with the overall theme of the console. I can only guess Vadu made a pact with Dracula himself to create something so amazing. That, or maybe Vadu is really good at what he does, especially considering past console creations.

QuitePC Mono PC Chassis combines desktop and all-in-one PCs http://walyou.com/quitepc-mono-pc-chassis-combines-desktop-and-all-in-one-pcs/ http://walyou.com/quitepc-mono-pc-chassis-combines-desktop-and-all-in-one-pcs/#comments Fri, 26 Sep 2014 14:00:59 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179723

While all-in-one PCs are beautiful and convenient, the power of a regular computer is just undeniable. Users don’t have to balance these issues anymore, though.

Comfortable and beautiful looking all-in-one PCs now can run some real horsepower with custom computer parts chosen by users thanks to QuietPC, a computer chassis barely thicker than an iMac. QuietPC Mono was designed to let users choose the parts that best fit their needs just like in a regular computer, but preserving the sleek, slim look of all-in-one PCs, all without the risk of overheating.

The chasis comes in different sizes, at 21, 23 and 27 inches depending on what users require. They cost $407.37, $339.24 and $298.37 USD respectively.

Xbook One: the Xbox One shrinks to laptop size http://walyou.com/xbook-xbox-one-mod/ http://walyou.com/xbook-xbox-one-mod/#comments Tue, 16 Sep 2014 14:00:08 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179418

The Xbox one gets a drastic size reduction in this mod, and ends up both portable and beautiful for it.

There was so much controversy when the Xbox One was first announced that some of it never was addressed. Chief amongst those complaints? The Xbox One is ugly-looking. Luckily, we have mods and talented modders working their way around this, amongst these, the Xbook One. This mod is the creation of Ed Zarick, a pretty well known name in the scene, who has been active and modifying consoles ever since the Xbox 360.

What is amazing about this build, though, is that Ed is 3D printing to make the console prettier, more durable and useful, but while keeping every part that matters actually functioning. Matter of fact, this is better than a regular, unmodded Xbox One as it includes extra HDMI ports, or several other improvements that Ed could add at the buyers’ request. Yes, Ed will personally build one for you for $1,095 (USD) if you provide him with a console, or $1,395 if you expect him to buy it too.

Dishonored Xbox 360 Controller Has Gamers in Stitches http://walyou.com/dishonored-xbox-360-control-pad/ http://walyou.com/dishonored-xbox-360-control-pad/#comments Wed, 03 Sep 2014 16:05:49 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=179105

Arkane Studios’ 2012 game is not only one of the best in the stealth action-adventure genres, but also serves as inspiration for cosplay, and as of late, for gaming controllers.

Devin Smith, who is probably better known as End of Line Designs on teh Interwebz, just finished modding an Xbox 360 control pad that Corvo Attano would be proud of using, had he be living in the tenzies, and not in what looked like Victorian times. After all, the new design of the Dishonored Xbox 360 controller has a lot in common with the overall theme of the game.

The combination of canvas and leather, all held together by stitches, reminds the ones who played the game of Corvo’s mask. I imagine that the stitches might come in the way of your mittens, if handling the controller improperly, but as long as you hold it by the parts covered in leather, everything should be OK.

Speaking of parts covered in leather, the buttons have been changed entirely, and so has the light, everything to make the similarities more apparent. Instead of the green backlit Xbox 360 logo, now there’s the Outsider’s mark, beautifully projecting from above a blue light.

The canvas that adorns the sides and the center of the Dishonored control pad might prove problematic in certain environments. To be more precise, it might absorb sweat, depending on the environment’s temperature and on how much the gamer’s hand perspire. That leads in time both to the degradation of said canvas and to the accumulation of possibly unpleasant odors. That’s not as if conventional control pads were germ-free or something.

Games reacted in a hilarious way upon seeing the modded controller, as an long line of risible comments ensued on Kotaku and other sites. While the mod had some people in stitches, others claimed that they didn’t get the joke and asked to be sewed. You get the picture!

One thing everyone agreed on was how awesome, yet uncomfortable the Dishonored controller looks. It’s not at all ergonomic and would most probably hurt people’s hands, had they used it for prolonged periods of time. Such a piece is better kept in a show case than used, and even more so since it is a unique thing.

Rose Colored Gaming Creates SNES, Super Famicom-style GBAs http://walyou.com/snes-super-famicom-gba/ http://walyou.com/snes-super-famicom-gba/#comments Mon, 14 Jul 2014 14:00:20 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=177188

Retro gaming system modifiers Rose Colored Gaming brings together two classic Nintendo platforms together into one mighty fine looking handheld.

I tend to think of the Game Boy Advance as the blessed reincarnation of the Super Nintendo. Just taking a quick glance at both system’s libraries from a far, I honestly can’t tell the difference between the two. That isn’t me knocking either, personally I find that an absolutely great thing considering the memorable line-up titles the SNES afforded.

So it’s only truly fitting that Rose Colored Gaming, who specialize in giving retro game consoles some amazing-looking paint jobs (check out their website for further proof), to come up with a pair of Super Nintendo/Super Famicom-themed Game Boy Advances. Oh, yes, I think these came out quite well. Don’t you think so?

Rose Colored Gaming stayed religiously faithful to each respective console’s designs, accurately using the same color cues, like that shade of funky purple-gray from the North American/PAL version of the console, on each GBA’s buttons, D-pads, and shells. The heavy obsession to details even extends to their retail packaging, which mimic original SNES/SFC game boxes.

Being the Super Famicom snob that I am, I tend to gravitate towards the SFC in terms of looks, but I would be so giddy to get my hands on either of these modded, back-lit included portables. Speaking of which, they’ll be available in limited quantities for the premium price of $249 USD (in either SNES/SFC styles) from their Facebook page, so act fast if you want to purchase one for yourself.

BigBoy Advance: GBA becomes a very literal giant http://walyou.com/bigboy-advance-gba/ http://walyou.com/bigboy-advance-gba/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2014 19:17:28 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=177206

When it comes to DS and 3DS, users get to pick between the regular and XL versions of the consoles. We sort of wish this had been the case with the GBA, though.

A lot of modders are into the whole “turn your home-console into a portable experience” shtick, but Bacman‘s Bacteria decided to go around it the opposite way. He modified a Gameboy Advance unit to give it a huge 8? 4:3 screen. That is bigger than a Nexus phone or even a PS Vita! He dubbed the project BigBoy Advance, and now we get to show you guys some of what makes it so special.

Creating this baby was rather nostalgic for the modder, as his first project had been another GBA unit. He said the end result hadn’t been as good as he expected, mainly because of the parts he used and some odd decisions that shortened it’s battery life amongst other things, but it made him a better modder in the process. Well, it shows, because this piece looks fantastic.

You can see the BigBoy Advance functioning in the video below.

Custom-Painted SNES Pays Homage To Yoshi’s Island http://walyou.com/snes-yoshis-island/ http://walyou.com/snes-yoshis-island/#comments Tue, 01 Jul 2014 14:00:15 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=176918

Are you green with envy about this custom-painted Yoshi’s Island Super Nintendo? No, don’t answer. The answer is, yes, of course.

Designed by Zoki64, who seems to always magically conjure up specialty versions of classic video game hardware, this PAL region SNES (which, frankly is the best-looking version of Nintendo’s 16-bit console) is draped from console to controllers in a wicked shade of green, in honor of Mario’s dinosaur buddy, Yoshi. In particular, Yoshi’s Island.

Known for his long-stretchy tongue and unstoppable appetite, Yoshi has been a featured face to almost every Mario outing since his debut back in 1991’s Super Mario World. He’s even been the star of a few of his own games, including the splashy motif used for this custom SNES, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island from 1995.

Great work as usual from Zoki64. And don’t forget that you can see more of his wild console paint jobs over on his deviantArt page.

GameCube Portable: I don’t think I still care about the 3DS http://walyou.com/gamecube-portable/ http://walyou.com/gamecube-portable/#comments Wed, 25 Jun 2014 14:00:23 +0000 http://walyou.com/?p=176753

What if GameCube consoles suddenly became portable, and you could play Zelda: Windwaker, Resident Evil 4 or Metroid Prime on the go? Well, you don’t have to dream anymore.

The Atari Lynx was one of the first serious competitors to Nintendo’s total domination on the portable market. Yet, those days are long gone, and thanks to a modder who goes by the name of Akira, both Atari and the big N reunite under the same case: this is an Atari Lynx housing a functional GameCube portable mod.

Akira calls this baby the GC Lynx. He equipped it with a 4.3? 480×272 widescreen display, and applied a custom paint-job with the original GameCube’s colors. Furthermore, he rebuilt the entire control scheme using parts from a Wii and a GameCube controller, so it responds just like the real thing. The battery feeds the console for up to three hours (that’s about half of what a 3DS lasts), but can be used while it charges. Also, the console was modded to run the games from an SD card instead of optical media (something the PSP should have done from the start). You can see it functioning in the video below these lines.
