Plastic Drinkware Signals the Existence of Date Rape Drugs

DrinkSavvy is a startup that intends to prevent drug-aided sexual assaults with the help of plastic drinkware that signals the existance of date rape drugs in a drink.

The main audience of this company should be represented by clubs, bars and people who frequent such establishments. Unfortunately, most of the clubs pretend to be pretentious by only using glassware when serving drinks. In my opinion, one possible solution would be to coat the interior of the glasses with such a color-changing plastic layer.

Mike Abramson, the developer of DrinkSavvy, stated: “We all know not to leave our drinks unattended, but the reality is it’s impossible to keep an eye on your drink all night…[With DrinkSavvy] that means discrete, 100% effortless, and continuous drink monitoring throughout the night.”

Abramson’s company cooperated with Dr. John MacDonald, a professor of chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to develop this innovative drinkware. According to them, the entire range would include straws, plastic cups, stirrers and glassware.

DrinkSavvy was featured on Indiegogo at the end of 2012, and since it raised all of the necessary funds, it will enter mass production soon.

Detecting the date rape drugs by smell, taste or color is impossible, hence the need for such a solution. The products from the DrinkSavvy change are quite common, at a first glance. However, once the straws and stirrers are inserted in a spiked drink, or such a drink is poured in a plastic cup made by this company, DrinkSavvy products turn red, showing that the one pouring the drink has anything but good intentions.

The products will first be sold online, so that women (cause let’s face it, this product was created for this gender) from various parts of the country (or world) can benefit from using them. On top of that, selected rape crisis centers will get DrinkSavvy products for free.

Considering the great number of rapes that take place each year (many of them facilitated by date rape drugs), such a solution is more than welcomed. Clubs and bars should embrace the offer DrinkSavvy makes them, as an establishment that makes efforts for its safety surely gets more customers.

In the past few years, quite a few products were developed for the safety of women from all over the world. Hopefully, the number of such items will continue to grow till bad things don’t happen anymore.
