On the Go? Take Your Jetson Folding Guitar

There have been plenty of words used to describe guitars over the years. Those that come to mind usually include “rocking” and “awesome,” but what you don’t hear very often is “portable.”

The reason for this is obvious: Guitars are flipping heavy and are generally constructed out of heavier materials like, say, wood. One guy who happened to be a designer, Daniel Mapp, has endeavored to solve that problem by creating an innovative guitar called the “Jetson.” This little guy can be folded up and taken wherever you need to go in fairly short order.

In terms of materials, wood wasn’t well suited to the project as you might imagine. Instead, a wooden structure was replaced with an aluminum surface, although the creator assures us that it doesn’t lose much in the way of durability for this trade off. The folding guitar also opens up all 12 octaves of every fret (what the hell is a fret?) to play 288 notes on the guitar scale.  I don’t play the thing, but that sure sounds like a lot of notes to me. I’ll take his word for it, you know?

In terms of folding, the hinge is hidden inside the neck, and it folds away towards the back of the guitar. This lets the player slide his/her hand down the frets to play whatever badass tune they want without any sort of obstruction. No word on the cost or the quality of sound, but if it all pans out properly, I’d bet there would be some demand for a gadget like this somewhere. Most guitar players are generally on the move quite a bit, right? For some other guitar mod fun, you can check out this awesome electric guitar cake or this unique shovel guitar mod.
