Blowing and Yelling Controlled Vintage Shooter

Some of the newest accessories for video game consoles proved that a usual gamepad with buttons, held in a hand, is not the only way to play video games. Xbox indie games developers managed to reveal that Kinect doesn’t close the matter. Even though PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew seems to be a bit of weird, only for fun and arguably the geekiest game ever.

Yes, that is not a mistake, PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew is the correct and full name of the production. There are many fans of vintage games out there and those fans were involved in creation of this game for Global Game Jam 2011 (an International Game Developers Association’s event aimed at promoting new ideas in the gaming industry, held in January 28-30, 2011). Obviously, the word “pew” on this occasion is simply an onomatopoeia (a word used to imitate the source of sound it describes), as it reminds the sound of early games’ laser firing.

The game itself is a very simple 2D scrolling type shooter, with a kind of spaceman character controlled by two players altogether, both holding ordinary Rock Band microphones for Xbox. One of the players blows to the mic which moves the character up and down and the other one yells the word “pew” to the mic, which controls the laser weapon. The aim of the firing are simple 2D obstacles. Of course, the couple of players must be able to coordinate their actions well in order to succeed.

PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew  is supposed to be available through Xbox Live Indie Games service, so anyone with a microphone may try it. Though it is hard to predict a huge success, one must agree that the game brings a bit of novelty combined with lots of nostalgic fun.
