Is the PlayStation 4 in a European Turmoil?

With a European PS4 release not looking likely until 2014 and a newly halved number of European developers for the console, Sony fans in PAL territories might have something to worry about.

Today news broke that while last week’s announcement of the PlayStation 4 came with Sony heralding an impressive list of publishers and developers who are preparing titles for the fancy, new, next-gen console, there were dozens of errors in the list that sees the amount of PS4 developers and publishers pared down to just 28 European devs and pubs, just over half of the figure of 53 game makers that Sony presented to us last week.

The new list is as follows

  • Avalanche Studios
  • Blitz Games Studios
  • Bohemia Interactive
  • CD Projekt RED
  • Climax Studios
  • Hello Games
  • Just Add Water (Developments), Ltd.
  • Deep Silver
  • Lucid Games Ltd
  • MercurySteam
  • Ninja Theory Ltd
  • Nixxes Software BV
  • Paradox Interactive
  • Rebellion
  • Saber Interactive
  • Creative Assembly
  • IO Interactive
  • Starbreeze Studios
  • 2K Games
  • Team 17 Digital LTD
  • Yager
  • Zen Studios
  • keen games
  • Splash Damage
  • Stainless Games Ltd
  • Sumo Digital
  • Codemasters
  • TT Games

While European gamers will be delighted at the inclusion of Codemasters and 2K Games, both are renowned developers and publishers in the region, others will be disheartened to see previously listed companies, Rovio (developer of mobile hit, Angry Birds) and Criterion (creator of the Burnout series and developer of several Need for Speed games) who would surely make at least one ‘Game of the Year’ title on PS4 between them should they decide to make games for the PS4.

According to the developers and publishers who were originally on the list, the error was on ”Sony’s side” as many of them have not yet made a decision as to whether or not they will developer or publish any PlayStation 4 titles.

Also worrying for those planning on purchasing the PS4 in Europe is that Sony have today clarified that they aren’t sure whether the console will even launch in Europe in 2013, with Fergal Gara, UK Managing Director of SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) commenting on the likelihood of a one region 2013 release for the PS4 saying that

“[The PS4 will launch in one region] at least. It will launch this year, but the precise details as I say for exact dates, exact regions, is it all or some of them? We don’t know.”

While none of this needs to be too concerning for European gamers, the idea of a later released date with even less stellar launch titles that the PS4 needs to make a serious impact in the region, isn’t very promising.
