Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play Sneaks Online

The world was introduced to Sony Ericsson’s slim, metro-sexual, Android-running Xperia Arc last week, but thanks to a leaked review, we’ve been given a chance to meet its beefier video game-obsessed brother, the Xperia Play.Xperia Play in the wild

Code-named Zeus, this smart phone project is one gamers everywhere have been anticipating due to its slide-out gamepad and PSP-like design. ePrice of Taiwan posted the review online Saturday with photos, video and specs to boot.

The device has a 4-4.2-inch screen possibly with AMOLED or Sony’s Bravia technology and a 854 x 480 resolution. It also runs Android’s famed 2.3 Gingerbread with a 1GHz second-gen Snapdragon processor as well as an Adreno 205 GPU. On the back of the phone, there’s a 5-MP camera with an LED flash. There is also two microphones (including one for noise canceling) and speakers on the device along with a headphone jack and MicroUSB port. On the front display, you’ll find the four Android buttons just below the screen, a light sensor, proximity sensor, and a front-facing camera. Can you say video chat?

When the game-pad slides out, you’ll see the PlayStation’s normal control setup with an analog directional pad to the left of the four-symbol action pad to the right. Between these is an elongated oval control pad that appears to have two extra buttons. We have a feeling these will be utilized in gaming functionality in interesting ways. We can only imagine the possibilities this phone will have for on-the-go gaming. The processor and GPU definitely have the potential for great graphic output and gaming innovation for PlayStation game developers, and it’s pocket-worthy size makes the PSP look obsolete. Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting leaks.
