Moosejaw X-ray App Lets You Leer at Clothed Models in Skivvies [Slightly NSFW]

There is no doubt that sex sells, and that is in fact a rule that advertising students are taught form the day 1. With that in mind outerwear retailer Moosejaw has decided to tap into the rule #1 of advertising and unveiled an iPhone app that works in conjunction with their print magazine.

What the X-ray app does is, when you hover your iPhone around the glossy pages that depict fully covered models, it allows you to see them in their underwear. It is almost X-ray-like in nature, and this is perhaps how augmented reality is going to look like in the coming months. The success of the ad campaign can be confirmed with Moosejaw’s sales report, which shows an increase of 37% in terms of sales when compared with the same period in November last year.

Other retailers too have tried such apps that let you see models in their underwear but they haven’t met the success that Moosejaw has. Gary Wohlfeill, the company’s creative director revealed that it is not about sensationalizing their product but their ad campaign is all about delighting their subscriber base and keeping them happy. By letting people see near naked models when they are still fully clothed, the company has targeted the voyeur in us and taht is precisely why such apps are more successful.

When it comes to clothes, more is always less I suppose. If an underwear model and a fully clothed model are printed next to each other, we would be more interested in the fully clothed model’s package. It is that voyeuristic instinct in us that has been tapped byMoosejaw’s iPhone app. You could also go ahead and leer at this Police Taser Naked Jogger video that we had featured a year ago. Perhaps sunglass manufacturers will go ahead and design glasses that lets voyeurs watch anyone they want.
