Seeing as how the majority of gamers get their daily sustenance from bags of Doritos and bottles of Mountain Dew, I’m not sure how many of you know what a plate is. Here’s a quick refresher: they’re round, flat, you eat real food – you know, stuff that isn’t Doritos or Mountain Dew – on it, and sometimes they’ve got lovely art printed on the front.

Just like these two plates designed by UK graphic designer Olly Moss that feature classy prints from The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Pokémon. Olly based his set of dinnerware on The Willow Pattern, a reference that’s likely lost on our generation, but if you’re a granny with a set of fine china, you might know the history of this unique pattern.

Willow Pattern’s have been printed on the faces of ceramic kitchen wares since 18th century England, and here Olly has managed an bloody good job in recreating their pristine style using two popular games on the Game Boy. In fact, I think it’s thanks to the monochrome visual set of these games that lends a lot to achieving that fine china look.

Of course, you do need a lot of skill to create such elaborate designs, which naturally Olly has in spades. If you’re not familiar with his work – and you certainly should be folks – Olly’s done a ton of professional artwork based on prominent nerd obsessions like The Lord of the Rings, The Avengers, and even the box art for the PlayStation 3 shooter, Resistance 3.

I totally recommend that you direct yourself to the vicinity of Olly Moss’s website to see more of his amazing-looking creations, or just hang around Walyou for more geek-tastic posts about bionic hands with sensory feedback and our handy dandy gadget reviews. Both options are definitely win-wins.
