Windows 10 users can look forward to using Microsoft’s brand new Chromium-based Edge browser. The new update brings many new features and bug fixes. Users can now access tools previously not available, efficient extensions and browse quickly. All Windows 10 users will need to update to the new Edge browsers. Only Business users can decide not to update their Edge browsers.
Has Chromium-based Edge already lost its market share in the world of browsers?
Chromium engine already powers Vivaldi, Opera, Chrome among other browsers. CEO Satya Nadella expressed concerns about Chrome slowly becoming the default browser, fast outpacing Edge and other browsers. At the moment, only 2.3% of the browser market uses Edge. With the new update, the company hopes to turn this tide against Chrome and regain some of the lost markets.
Chromium-based Edge has issues and flaws
Many users have complained that Edge is very low, compared to other browsers. Although it uses less RAM than Chrome or Opera, it is not as lean as Firefox is. It is interesting to note that though Edge has good security features, it has often been criticized for not protecting users’ security much. Edge collects more data than other browsers by default, and turning these settings off is not as easy as it may seem.
Here are some of the major concerns with Edge that users have reported so far:
- It is quite slow when compared to other browsers
- Consumes more memory than required
- Collects data without permission
- Customizations are far and few
- Support is difficult to find
All one can do now is to wait and watch the browser’s behavior after the update
Only time will tell if the new update fixes these privacy concerns and performance issues. At the moment, only the most die-hard users of Windows 10 use Edge, while others prefer Chrome or Firefox. Those who use Apple devices such as MacBook often prefer Safari over other browsers, due to the deeper integration. Hopefully, the newer update makes data collection more transparent and also fixes the issue of slow browsing. More bug fixes are also on the horizon if one closely reads between the lines of what Satya Nadella said.
Edge can be downloaded for iOS and Android devices too.
