In an eighteenth century where royals rode high and in style, Marie Antoinette’s helicopter would be the crème de-la crème. Covered in huge, billowing pink feathers and gems, Lilicoptère is a simply a beautiful bauble fit for the woman who once said, “Let them eat cake.” While this helicopter may never gain liftoff from the ground, it is definitely fun to look at, especially as a piece of ‘retrofuturism.’
Created by Joana Vasconcelos, Lilicoptère is currently on display at the Palace of Versailles along with her other works of art. Her sculptures, like Lilicoptère provide a unique look at a blend of eighteenth century Versailles aesthetics and modern technology. Lilicoptère, especially, invokes the known excess of the ancient regime.
