Being called the ‘Apple of Asia’, Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, have sold 220,000 smartphones in 3 minutes during a sale on the country’s national holiday.
When it comes to the crème da la crème of smartphone makers, in the West in particular, our minds automatically switch to Apple and its iOS powered iPhones, or we think of its close rival, Samsung, whose smartphone gadgets run on the Android operating system. Across the globe in China, however, where the markets are ripe, the people are on the look out for premium gadgets and the sales of phones are high, most look towards smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi whose Android running phones are high quality and their sales events are something of a phenomenon. Now, the company are at it again, selling a whopping 220,000 smartphones in just 3 minutes.
The incredible sale took place on China’s annual Single’s Day, which celebrates the single life to the same level that Valentine’s Day celebrates couples. Known as a consumer holiday akin to America’s Black Friday sales, it was expected that stock of Xiaomi’s phones would fly off the shelves, but, the company wasn’t even close to being prepared. Choosing to go to market on the day with just 380,000 units, Xiaomi’s gadgets, which are exclusive to the country, 310,000 of that number were (Xiaomi’s flagship phone) the MI3, with the remaining being made up of their other smartphones, the MI-2S, and the Hongmi. In just 3 minutes, 220,000 units of the MI3 sold, seeing the company amass ¥107 million (£11 million) in that short space of time, with another half an hour seeing them clear through the rest of the stock entirely, adding another ¥300 million to that figure.
It’s unsurprising to most that the Xiaomi MI3 sold this much as the phone includes a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, allowing users to take photos with the 13-megapixel rear-camera with dual-flash and 2-megapixel front-camera, all of this and it comes with the mega popular Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean software and a 3050mAh battery to keep it running for quite a while. Not only this but the MI3 also comes in 16 or 64GB internal storage flavours making it a worthy phone for the casual music lover or for those using it for business. In fact, these kinds of sales figures and more affordable prices are likely what’s keeping Apple away from success in the region with a steely grip so we can only hope that this kind of quality smartphone makes it to market outside of China and in the West too.
We’ll keep you posted once we know more.
