Apple Awarded Patent for Image Refocusing Camera

Not content with being a dominating force in the smartphone and tablet markets, Apple could be looking to make cameras too as they’ve been awarded a new patent.

Part of what we know Apple to be, is a company that refuses to give up on taking over every market it dips it gadget-making feet into. There are now 7 different iPhones available, including the newly released iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C as well as several options for those who want to get their hands on an iPad – now in iPad Mini or iPad Air flavours too. They have their line of computers with MacBooks and iMacs, with the California-based company also reportedly looking to make waves with an iWatch and the much rumoured Apple TV is also said to be in the works. But the innovation doesn’t end there as Apple are said to have been awarded a patent for an image refocusing camera.

The news, which comes from Apple blog, Apple Insider, explains an awful lot about the supposed new Apple product. Said to be a camera that can refocus images, described in the patent as a “Digital camera including refocusable imaging mode adaptor.” Rather than being an add-on that might work with the iPhone or iPad, it’s said to be made up of the following, “a camera body; an image sensor mounted in the camera body having a plurality of sensor pixels for capturing a digital image; an imaging lens for forming an image of a scene onto an image plan”.

However, how Apple will make this a reality is anyone’s guess. It could very well come to market as a separate, standalone ‘iCamera’ product or it could just be an upgrade to their iOS operating system, which we might also see in the iPhone 6, the next iteration of Apple’s smartphone that’s said to be out next year. But, as it’s currently just a patent, there’s more to this story, which we will keep tabs on.

We’ll keep you posted once we know more.
