Charlie and the Apple Factory

If you thought Johnny Depp was a creepy Willy Wonka, get a load of College Humor’s new video, featuring an unshaven Steve Jobs as tourguide of the magical Apple Factory.

After hiding golden iTickets in the latest batch of iPods, Wonka–er, Jobs allows five lucky children to enter his factory and see how Apple products are made. The first scene in the factory is just like the scene in the Wonka movies, opening on a magical room with trees and flowers and a river in the background. This time, though, the foliage is not covered with candy but instead seems to grow Apple merchandise– iPods, iPads, iMacs, etc. Macbooks float through the air like birds, and there are even a few of those Mac rainbow wheels floating around.

The cartoon’s Charlie has only visited Jobs’ factory to find out exactly why so many loyal Apple fans are so obsessed with the products, a secret that another famous technology entrepreneur also covets:

Yep, Bill Gates makes a short cameo appearance, expressing frustration over Jobs’ success and offering Charlie “enough gift certificates to fill a thousand Zunes” if he can get the secret and fill him in.

Rife with sight gags and riffs on both Apple and Microsoft products, this cartoon is well worth four minutes of your time. I won’t tell you how it ends, but Charlie does find out the big secret, and it’s really not all that surprising.

Oh, and if you were hoping for an Oompa-Loompa song about the pitfalls of technology obsessions, you will not be disappointed.
