Comic book characters, and especially superheroes and villains, get rebooted all the time. Sometimes it’s to help sales pickup; sometimes it’s when a character reaches some sort of dead end in its story arc; and sometimes it’s to make it feel and look more modern.
Hipster is a phrase and phenomenon that didn’t exist when most of the comic book characters were thought of and first hit the pages, although there’s a chance they existed in another way or form.
In any case, Elizabeth Beals decided she wants to give the powerful women, good or bad, of the DC universe a more modern and chic look compared to their current everyday clothes, applying an interesting style makeover to the likes of Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Catwoman, making them look a lot more fitting in the second decade of the 21st century.
