Many of you would know William Shatner as the actor who essayed the role of the bold, confident, suave Captain Kirk on Star Trek: The Original Series. Many of you would not know that Mr. Shatner was also a long time patient of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a condition wherein a person suffers difficulty in breathing due to obstruction of the airway during sleep. A common definition for OSA is “The temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, often resulting in daytime sleepiness.”
The troublesome part of OSA is that the person experiencing it may never realize it, even after waking up from sleep, unless pointed out by his/her partner.
People who suffer from OSA experience unexplainable daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, anxiety, morning headaches, and other symptoms. Once OSA is identified, it can be treated with surgery or through Positive Airway Pressure techniques where a controlled stream of air is pumped into the lungs to allow the patient to breathe normally while asleep. These techniques, however, are either ineffective or too cumbersome to be carried out daily.
OSA patients can now breathe easy (literally) with a new non-invasive technique that promises to help the patient breathe normally during sleep. The Ventus PROVENT is a pair of nose buds, intelligently designed to maintain a controlled stream of air through the nasal passage as the patient sleeps. It performs the exact same function as a CPAP machine, but without the mask and other accessories.
PROVENT is shaped like an iPod earplug, with a circular skin-colour adhesive sticker that can be attached to the nostrils. The advantage with PROVENT is that it is a very simple and an extremely discreet procedure that does not cause any obstruction to the user’s current lifestyle. Since it is small in size, it can be carried anywhere. The user would not require any external help to wear the nose plugs before sleep.
This OSA product by Ventus is not just some cheap internet product masquerading as a serious solution. PROVENT has been clinically tested and is proven to be effective. It uses a proprietary MicroValve technology that allows the user to breathe in freely, but, while breathing out, the stream of air directed through two small air channels helps to keep the airway open.
With PROVENT, people suffering from OSA will no longer be embarrassed about their condition. An easy to use, simple solution is finally at hand that allows OSA patients to breathe easily.
