This Buster Sword Is Best Left Hanging Over The Mantle

The Final Fantasy series have churned out a myriad of iconic weapons – but from the gunblade to the megaphone to the Blitzball, there is none more famous than the Buster sword. It made it’s first appearance in Final Fantasy VII and was unbelievably wielded by the noodle-armed Cloud Strife, the very first androgynous rock star of the series. While plenty of fan-made replicas have surfaced on the internet, none of them have gotten me more excited than the one made by michaelctulhu who first posted a video of his creation of YouTube.

In the video, a man who looks a lot like Gimli from Middle Earth, attempts to swing the massive fifty-four hunk of metal before he’s stopped by his loving family (apparently his doctor recommended that he “stop messing with swords” after he slipped a disk in his back). Luckily for us, his cameraman is there to save the day and let me tell you – this guy is huge. He looks like he wrestles grizzlys for fun and even he struggles to lift up the sword. He takes four swings at a stack of wood and surprisingly does little damage. Maybe next time they should consider making it out of something lighter. Gandalf recommends mithril.

The design of the hilt and the etches on the blade are incredibly detailed. They conform to the design updates of the Buster sword seen first in Cris Core – Final Fantasy VII – and then in Advent Children. This means that there is a swirl motif at the base tinted in gold paint and a latch cover for the materia slots (two holes). The blade is also black instead of “metallic” and the hilt is bandaged in red. All in all, I’d say this replica is a wicked success and make sure you check their other videos of sword replicas/demos. I can’t wait for them to get started on a workable Fusion Buster sword.
