Evangelion Water Body Bottles are Seductively Thirst Quenching

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my forays into the world of gadgetry and geekdom, it’s that some fans are hardcore enough to gobble up just about anything that references their passion of choice – the Evangelion Water Body Bottles are a perfect example of this. While merchandising options typically to spread out into a wide number of products, I hadn’t considered using water bottles in this manner. The bottles are designed to imitate the suits worn by the Evangelion pilots from the series. I always thought Rei had the better of the two, but feel free to disagree with me.

These bottles were recently put on display over at the Foodex Japan 2010 show in Tokyo and while I instantly recognized the suits I also noticed a noticeable absence in the lineup. I mean come on guys, Shingi Ikari wore a suit in the series and subsequent movies too didn’t he? Then again I guess having a bottle shaped like a teenage boy probably isn’t as appealing to your average anime fan (ladies will have to back me up on this, I’m speculating here). You’re given the option of two bodysuits numbered by their respective Evas. 02 was worn by Asuka Langley Soryu and 00 was sported by the mysterious and blunt Rei Ayanami. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, shame on you. Also head over to your Netflix queue and load up the Evangelion series. All of it. Prepare to have your mind blown.

Now with that out of the way, there’s something vaguely disturbing about drinking a bottle shaped like the characters from the show. I mean it’s kind of like popping the head off a mannequin and having apple juice shoot out of the top. Still I have to believe there’s a target demographic of Eva fans and enough of them out there to make the bottles at least mildly successful. Naturally the bottles are set to coincide with the release of the new “Evangelion: Destruction” on both Blu Ray and DVD. If you’re curious the bottle size is 9.5 oz and they run about $4 (368 yen for you currency people out there). The official release date to retail outlets is set to May 26, 2010.
