According to sources, Sony dropped the 3D visor, awkwardly named the HMZ-T1, on spectators at the recent IFA electronics convention in Berlin. Sony is currently touting the device as the “world’s first 3D compatible Head Mounted Display” designed to allow users to watch 3D movies, picture sound and all, in full privacy.
Other companies have released 3D visors recently, such as eMagin’s Z800 and the Vuzix Wrap 1200, though these earlier models have been more akin to glorified 3D goggles.
Sony’s visor promises much higher resolution than anything out there on the market. The device employs two 0.7″ HD LED display to display the image in the front of the visor while the speakers in the ear pieces offer surround sound. The device offers a wide range of compatibility, being able to connect to a variety of Blu-Ray platers and the Playstation 3.
The thought that these visors could be used for gaming seems like something right out of science fiction. If motion controls ever become cool again, and we get some good developers beind them, the possibility of a full on virtual reality headset suddenly doesn’t seem all that far away.
There hasn’t been any reliable news yet as to what the price will be, nor the world wide distribution date. They will be launching in Japan this November, with an estimated retail price tag of 60 000 Yen, around $800. The rest of the world will have to wait.
