Samsung has announced its first smartphone manufactured with a focus on environmentally sound credentials: the Replenish. It will be the first Android device from Sprint that will not require a $10 premium monthly data charge since the carrier made the new fee a requirement.
The Replenish’s casing includes 34.6 percent post-consumer recycled plastic content (the highest level in Samsung’s eco-portfolio) and 82 percent of the device is made from recyclable materials. It also’s extremely energy efficient, with a charger that meets the EC Code of Conduct on Energy Efficiency of External Power Supplies, Version 4, as well as a visual alert for full charge.
Its specs are solid, but anyone purchasing this phone will do so for its environmentally-conscious hardware, not its internals. Highlights include Android 2.2 (Froyo), a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display, a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2-megapixel camera.
The portrait keyboard layout on an Android device should please some Sprint users who watched fellow CDMA carrier Verizon get the Droid Pro. Above the QWERTY lie the 4 quintessential Android buttons: Search, Back, Home and Menu.
Of course, an added bonus is the fact that its an Android powered device, meaning you’ll have access to over 150,000 apps in the Android Market. The handset also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and support for microSD cards. It will be enabled with Sprint ID, which lets customers personalize their device instantly with eco-friendly focused apps and mobile content.
The Samsung Replenish smartphone will be available with three colors options : Onyx Black, Arctic Blue and Raspberry Pink for $49.99 on Sprint.
