The Samsung Galaxy S was undoubtedly a hit for Samsung, and many view it as a major step forward for the Android operating system. It now has a sequel: the Galaxy S II.
The Galaxy S II is powered by the latest generation 1.2GHz Exynos CPU coupled with 1GB of RAM and 15 GB of storage. Samsung bumped the screen size from 4″ to 4.3″, while managing to reduce the thickness of the phone dramatically. At approx. 8.4mm, the Galaxy S 2 is the thinnest smartphone on the market.
You’ll find a stunning 4.3″ WVGA (800×480) Super AMOLED Plus display at the center of the handset. However, many were expecting the Galaxy S II to ship with the qHD (960×540) screen now shipping on many other high-end Android devices. Still, the differences are marginal, and the Super AMOLED should leaving little to be desired.
The Galaxy S 2 supports Wi-Fi (b, g, n), Bluetooth 3.0, FM radio, and supports quadband GSM and UMTS (850/900/1900/2100) along with HSPA+ up to 21Mbps. In terms of sensors, the device has light, proximity, gyroscope, and an accelerometer. There’s also an NFC chip inside.
On the front of the device lies a 2MP front-facing camera which cannot take video (but can be used with video chat apps like Qik and Gtalk), and a rear 8MP camera with flash that can record 1080p video. You can output 1080p video to a television or projector with the HDTV Adapter, which is not yet on sale. Powering the device is a 1650mAh battery.
This device has the latest software from both Google and Samsung, meaning Android 2.3 and TouchWiz 4.0. The Samsung Galaxy S II is the latest and greatest offering the Android platform has to offer, and the price shows it. Since it’s not available directly from a carrier, it’s priced at $799.99.
