LG recently revealed one of the latest technologies it is working on: transparent LCD displays. The 47″ display knows as the Window Display, may play a dramatic role in advertising, if LG decides to make it widely available.
The display features an IPS panel, which is known to offer better contrast and color reproduction than the VA or TN panels. As it features a maximum resolution of 1920×1080, full HD content can be displayed. The color temperature is of 10,000 K, which is characteristic to cool colors.
The tight competition between LG, Samsung and the other LCD display manufacturers constrains each company to invest a lot of resources in their R&D (Research and Development) department, to the benefit of the consumers. As seen in the above video, the 47″ display also has touchscreen capabilities, and multi-touch is also exemplified. This feature turns to be really useful when viewing photos on the display, as zooming in or out become really effortless.
It is difficult to believe that such a display could ever make its way to the homes of typical consumers. IPS panels are known to be very expensive, and using such a display for entertainment may affect the overall experience. Replacing the windows with such displays, on the other hand, is a terrific idea. However, for shopping malls and companies that rely on digital advertising, it may represent a very good solution. As it is transparent, it does not obstruct the visual field and for this particular reason, it may be considered a less aggressive form of advertising.
For the moment, LG did not disclose neither the price, nor the release date for this product, but hopefully for advertising companies, it will go into mass production soon.
