Premeditated disposability

We have previously encountered arguments questioning the need for value in the post purchase stage. Individuals repeatedly state that ‘we live in a disposable society’,’I throw away my products the moment they start failing on me’, and some even mention that ‘with new technologies coming out, products become obsolete in a matter of months’. The above statements respectively illustrate that products are less reliable, and while warranty coverage decreases, complexity and fear of new technologies increases.

Do we truly believe that this trend is in the benefit of the consumer?

What is this mysterious Sony Rolly?

My first peek of the Sony Rolly was through the video below, and I watched it entirely in order to try and figure out what I was watching. It seems the Rolly is a miniature boombox, with integrated speakers, lights, and movements all combined in an egg shaped music player. By the end of the video, the tiny size of this new Rolly can be determined and well appreciated.

Rolly.tv is the unofficial Sony Rolly site, which has links, news, and additional information. There is also the Sony teaser campaign site of Rolly Show, which has videos, pictures, and a mailing list about the mysterious Rolly.

Sometimes What You See Is NOT What You Get!

Beware when buying a USB drive outside regular computer stores or through street vendors. Sometimes it can be a scam! We deserve to get what we paid for but sometimes it goes too far. The picture by gigatigga easily shows a fake USB flash drive opened to illustrate why it would not work. This is not the first time I heard of this scam.

A good friend of mine bought a Sony 4GB flash drive in China, but when he came back home he discovered that it simply did not work. Of course Sony didn’t have anything to do with it. It was simply fraud by the street vendor. My friend is one out of many customers that encountered such experiences. Running a simple Google search on such incidents, I found many examples from users saying that people sold them fake USB drives on the street, on the internet, and even on eBay. So if you consider buying such electronics, please read users’ comments and do not be tempted by price alone.

Xbox 360: Long repair times

Microsoft has heard the cries of their customers and extended the Xbox 360 warranty to three years. With this, the repair times have also been extended. Many are sending in their Xbox 360s for repairs and have realized that waiting times have grew. Instead of the two weeks that many have been accustomed to, repairs are now taking as long as six weeks.

Of course we can always say that since there are more repairs, there are longer waiting times. But why are there more repairs? The warranty has been extended, not the hardware, features, options, etc.
