The Recon 6.0 Programmable Rover from Thinkgeek is one hell of a toy with a multitude of possibilities – if you can call it that. The rover is a toy, robot and tool combo wrapped in a body which resembles a certain adorable little guy from Pixar. It’s good to see grown-up tech finally reaching the hands of little geeks everywhere. As kids grow ever smarter with every generation, the tech they rely on to learn has to keep up. That’s where toys like the Recon 6.0 Programmable Rover come in, currently $59.99 at over at Thinkgeek.
The rover is certainly a snazzy looker with cool orange accents. Programming the Rover is easy with its large LCD display and gone are the days when the adult would set up the toy and operate it for the child. Now your little geeks can get in on the action and do some programming themselves. It also features bright LED headlights, tank-style track drive with third wheel, cargo hold, microphone, speaker, sound effects, memory bank for programmable multi-directional trips and a ‘return to home’ command. The great thing is that the more competent the child grows in operating this thing, the more it can do. The 3 C type batteries requirement is a slight letdown, but I suppose we can’t get rechargeable batteries in all our gadgetry and toys.
Some possible uses of the Rover include navigating an obstacle course, delivering a treat to your dog (just make sure your dog is robot friendly), submitting a request for waffles to mom, and even dancing after a hard day of work. Now is a good time to pick one of these little guys up for the holidays. I know I definitely want one; there’s something about programmable toys that I just can’t resist.
