No matter how hard you try, you just cannot bring yourself to hate this toon character. With his square shaped head, big round eyes, prominent bunny teeth, and schoolboy attire, you can only love him and adore him for his childlike innocence.
He is a fry cook by profession and Nickelodeon’s most popular cartoon character: SpongeBob SquarePants.
SpongeBob Squarepants first aired on Nickelodeon in May 1999, became popular with its second season, and has been a global phenomenon ever since. Though originally intended for kids, the cartoon has attracted a strong teenage and adult fan following due to SponegeBob’s innocence. The show’s mass appeal has led to a popular and successful merchandising line that includes books, games, toys, DVDs, music albums, and toys.
MediCom Toy Incorporated (known for its trademark Bearbrick toy design) has announced a new avatar of SpongeBob toys with its ‘SpongeBob SquarePants 1000% Bearbrick’ version. This follows on the heels of the very popular 400% Bearbrick version of SpongeBob SquarePants. For the uninitiated, the percentage value mentioned reflects the size of the toy. A 1000% SpongeBob SquarePants Bearbrick would be approximately 70 centimeters tall.
Readers may feel that a square shaped SpongeBob may be a misfit in a Bearbrick avatar. When you hold the Bearbrick version in your hand, you will realize that it is just as adorable and innocent looking as its square shaped version.
The design cues of the character combine well with the Japanese inspired Bearbrick canvas. SpongeBob in his new avatar retains his blue wide eyes, buck toothed grin, and trademark schoolboy attire: white shirt, red tie, brown shorts, white socks, and black shoes. Though the square shaped face is morphed into a toon-style bear face, designers have been very careful in rendering a sponge-like spots to the toy’s face.
The only difference between a Bearbrick SpongeBob and a square shaped one is its structure. Bearbrick toys are known for their simplified form and a rounded potbelly with proportionate arms and legs. Another notable exception is the nose; it is flat and rounded unlike the elongated nose of the original SpongeBob. An important note for collectors: this may be the only SpongeBob toy available that has ears on it.
If this piece has whetted your appetite and you cannot wait to wrap your fingers on the Bearbrick SpongeBob, you may have to wait a bit. The SpongeBob SquarePants 1000% Bearbrick is scheduled for release on August 7, 2010.
I am sure if you take a look at Monster Bobble Heads and Hulk Toy you would want to buy these too…
