Steampunk R2-D2: Because Star Wars Needs More Brass

Everyone’s favorite robot now looks like it could serve in Queen Victoria’s court in London.

Re-imagining Star Wars is always awesome, as artists get to show an alternate version of George Lucas’ most iconic movie in a different, more personal light. We particularly like gritty versions to oppose to the clean look of the actual movies, and usually, the grittiest ones are steampunk (don’t believe us? Fine, check these drawings or these figurines).

In this case, artist Amoebaboy, self proclaimed robot maker, decided to create this excellent R2-D2 in steampunk fashion that tributes the original, while providing a twist thanks to its unique design choices and materials used.

The clean, almost plastic-y design of the movies has been replaced with one based off of metal and wood, using scrap and recycled materials but keeping everything that made this little guy recognizable in the first place. There’s also a lot of valves and cables to make it look like it’s actually steam-powered, and that its own body holds the coal that keeps it functioning. Clever!

We’d love to see how C-3PO would look in a similar style, being that he is already basically made out of brass, and a court could always use a couple extra protocol droids. Keep checking Amoebablog, Amoeba Boy’s personal blog if you want to see more creations, or even videos of some of his little monsters in action.
