Smartphones that display 3D content without glasses are not a novelty, so it was anyone’s guess that sooner or later tablets packing this feature would be released, too.
HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D were among the first devices to introduce us to the amazing thing of watching 3D objects on a mobile display. However, since both of these had relatively small display, the effect was not even close as spectacular as the one observed on the displays of 3D TV sets. LG Optimus Pad 3D was the first tablet to come with a 3D display, but the technology used in it did not differ much from the one used in TVs, as people still needed glasses to watch 3D content on it. In terms of convenience, mobile devices with 3D displays that require glasses are quite cumbersome, and should be replaced by the world’s first glasses-free 3D tablet, which is currently sold by Hammacher Schlemmer.
When it comes to naming their products, companies seem to have one of the following two approaches nowadays: they either pick a very cryptic name, made from random letters and numbers with at least a dash between them, or they choose a very generic name. This device is known simply as The No Glasses 3D Tablet, so it’s obviously that this manufacturer went on the second route.
The 3D effect is obtained using a parallax barrier atop the 8″ LCD screen. One aspect that the manufacturer should fix in the item’s description is that the HD display with 1280 x 800 resolution is in fact 1080p. While it could display 1080p content without any problems, it does so by downscaling the image to fit the tablet’s native resolution. Other than that, this product won’t make your jaw drop in any way. It only comes with 16GB of storage, which can be furthermore expanded via a 32GB microSD card. The package will also include a wireless keyboard case that presumably connects to the tablet via Bluetooth. A 2 MP adorns the back of the device, while the front makes use of a 0.3 MP camera for video calls. The rechargeable battery takes 2 hours to fully charge, but after that it will provide 5 to 7 hours of use.
The No Glasses 3D Tablet costs only $349.95, which is also the price of a 32GB LTE Nexus 7 2013, so if you’re currently looking for a tablet with unique features, you will have to pick between the brute force featured by Google’s offering and the 3D effects on the one manufactured by Hammacher Schlemmer. The specs of the new Nexus 7 will definitely make you think twice before buying this 3D tablet. Should you pick Hammacher Schlemmer’s product, you will have to wait until December 12 to order it, but chances are you can still place it under the tree if the order is placed on launch day.
