At last, the long wait for a fully-functional Star Trek communicator is over. This particular model even comes with Bluetooth connectivity, for wireless communication with alien races.
As a teenager (believe it or not, that was quite a while ago), I could hardly wait for Saturday evening to come so I can watch yet another Star Trek: The New Generation episode broadcast by the national television. At a later point, I binge watched all three seasons of The Original Series, and that’s when I was introduced to the first iteration of the now-famous Starfleet communicator. What you see below is a 21st century take on the original design, with all the bells and whistles that would make Trekkies geek out.
Well, truth be told, you might have to stick to talking to your fellow humans using this Bluetooth Star Trek communicator, but given that at some point we discover signs of extraterrestrial life (you know, other than mysterious signals emitted by microwave ovens), I don’t see why you couldn’t communicate with them, as well, with the help of this incredible device.
The Bluetooth Star Trek communicator is the product of The Wand Company (which also makes replicas of the Doctor’s sonic screwdrivers). They made it so it doesn’t only look, but also sound like the real thing. At the base of the charging stand there even is an engraved text saying “U.S.S. Enterprise Standard Issue Communicator.” If that doesn’t make you think of yourself as Captain Kirk, I really don’t know what will.
The Wand Company is well aware of the impact the Star Trek series over the entire world, and that is exactly why they worked so hard to create such a magnificent device. Well, the prospect of a financial gain might have been at play, too, but I guess most of us could overlook that. After all, it’s only $149.99, and most Trekkies have spent more than that on less useful memorabilia.
According to the Star Trek Shop, where you’ll also be able to buy this device at some point, the Bluetooth communicator is the most accurate replica of a Starfleet communicator. You will have to wait until January 2016 to buy it, but I’m sure that it will be worth it.
