This day and age, a lot of people, especially the younger part of the population, might not remember that a lot of the movies they’ve gotten accustomed to seeing in animated and live-action are actually versions of much older books and stories.
For example, the Grimms’ Fairy Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are considered to be one of the founding works of Western culture. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence.
The brothers Grimm did not write stories like Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel and Snow White, but collected German folk tales and adapted them into a collection that has endured well beyond their lifetimes.
