End of an Era: Best Buys Stops Analog TV Sales

Best Buy, one of the top US electronics retailers, has decided to stop the sale of Analog Televisions and will continue with Digital only. They are the first to make such a move and have already begun removing Analog Televisions sets from their shelves since the beginning of October.

This, of course, marks the end of an era. Just like VCRs have slowly seen their way off the retailers shelves, so do Analog Televisions. This doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise as more and more consumers are purchasing digital TV’s with flat panels and high-definition screens.

While Cable operators are required to guarantee broadcasting of channels until February 2012, actual broadcasters will stop Analog transmissions on February 18th, 2009 (3 years earlier). So how does this affect the 60 million households still relying on antennas or Analog cable? Now consumers have to either upgrade to Digital Televisions or purchase converter boxes to convert Digital signals to Analog.

In the beginning of the upcoming New Year, consumers will be able to purchase these converter boxes. They will actually be offered two, $40 coupons for the purchase of these boxes, and Best Buy will also begin selling coupon-eligible ones in early 2008.

Just like the days of the VCRs and Cassette Tapes, so are the Analog days coming to an end. Who ever thought that the Analog TV days we have all grown up with will end!

Thinking of the Analog Television, I promise to remember the many fun times we had together: how the TV antenna had to be adjusted frequently in order to get a better picture, the increasing times that a hit on the top of the set would improve the visual, and the number of family members it took to carry the Television from the car into the house.

Analog TV! You will not be forgotten! Thank you for being such a big part of our lives and the wonderful memories!

Never Say Cheese Again

I am annoyed when I see a family picture where I am not smiling. Everyone said “Say Cheese!” and I thought I was. Unfortunately my smile began to fall right before the picture was taken. What if there was a camera which would take pictures based on the subjects smiling?

Sony has releases the Cybershot DSC-T200 with “smile shutter”, which takes a picture based on the smiles of the subjects. This feature arrived from a smile measurement software that was developed by the Japanese Omron. It rates the smile on a 0 – 100 percent scale, and takes the picture based on your personal settings. Furthermore, it has the ability to track up to 8 subjects per picture at a time.

Take a look at this funny video for an example.

A New Phone Concept with Picture Buttons

My Dad always complains that today’s cordless and cell phones are too small. He claims that not only he cannot keep up with the innovative technology, but he is slowly losing the ability to even see it right. Every time he has to make a call, I see him bringing the phone close to his eyes, then away, then he wears his glasses, then removes them. Often he loses his patience and ends up asking me to help him dial or confirm the numbers he entered. This new phone design by Jeong-Kyun Nam will let him call people easily by images and allow him to forget the dialing.

By simple programming, which I would have to assist my Dad with, this phone allows the user to set speed dials based on different images. In turn, the phone book will be comprised of photo buttons that would be used to dial. Simply select the image of the person you would like to call…place it on the call button…and press.

Since my Dad’s sight is good enough to recognize me, I am optimistic that he would be able to recognize the large buttons of this phone.

On second thought, my Mom would also like one of these – this way, she could see her kids every day.

We must always remember that while technology is progressing quickly, some do not adapt as quickly as others. I think this phone concept is pretty cool, for it can help our parents, grandparents and many more

The Rubik’s Cube Subwoofer

I love these kind of things.

A student decided to build a giant subwoofer in the shape of the infamous Rubik’s Cube. The final piece looks amazing and definitely deserves a double and triple look.

Zachary Paisley began work on this project on July 10th 2007 in order to make a personal addition to his home theater’s sound system. After 80 days, it was completed: the world’s first Rubik’s Cube subwoofer. This ‘small’ project did end up costing a total of $1586.08.

If you are interested to construct a 15″ Direct-Servo subwoofer out of a Rubik’s Cube by yourself, you can find the ‘simple’ 164 step guide including pictures and explanations at the Project Cube site.

Greenpeace Claims Apple’s iPhone is not Environment Friendly

Greenpeace recently slammed Apple with the claim that the iPhone is built with hazardous material, causing environmental issues.

According to a test conducted in Greenpeace labs (excerpt here) in the United Kingdom, it was found that the iPhone contained “toxic brominated compounds (indicating the presence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)) and hazardous PVC”. The findings are detailed in the report, “Missed call: the iPhone’s hazardous chemicals”.

While there are some facts that support these claims, Apple responds to the claims made. An official spokesperson stated that they do in fact comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directives and according to Register Hardware: Greenpeace admits iPhone [is] ‘compliant’ with Euro chemicals rules (here).

In addition, “Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of PVC and BFRs [as mentioned above] in its products by the end of 2008” (see “A Greener Apple“). Lastly, this same page also illustrates their previous and ongoing movement towards a greener planet.

The Greenpeace video below briefly takes you through the process and findings.

Increase your WiFi Connection by Yourself

Has this ever happened to you? While surfing the net on your laptop, the wireless connection icon suddenly jumps up and warns you that your Internet connection is low or perhaps you have just been disconnected.

The immediate response for the above is to begin moving your laptop from side to side praying for the connection to increase or return. Just like looking at a compass and trying to determine the right direction, we end up walking around searching for a better WiFi reception.

Sometimes there are actual “dead areas” because of the location of your computer and router, thus the reception is low at certain points, not allowing you to surf properly.

There are many interesting and innovative solutions to solve this annoying problem. Some are in the form of accessories such as antenna extenders or external WiFi cards that attempt to extend your reception. Although many times these work well, they are costly and perhaps not as fun as doing it yourself.

The First option is for the light DIY users. With aluminum foil, glue, good will and 25 cents to spare, you can easily create the Windsurfer by yourself. The neat video by DL.TV can be seen below, and if you wish to use the template seen in the video, you can find it (here).

The second DIY option is an antenna hack where you take your regular antenna and turn it into a $30 range extender for the mere cost of approximately 5 cents! The simple step by step guide includes pictures and may be found at Instructables.

I hope these tips help you increase your Internet reception and surf quicker.I am certain there are many other ways to extend your WiFi reception. Please feel free to share with us any of your personal tips and projects that you’ve tried.

Use that Old Computer with Linux

A good friend of mine just upgraded his laptop and was wondering whether to sell or scrap the old one. While selling is an immediate option that many exercise, it doesn’t always end up with much money. Why not just use this computer to reduce the toll on the new one?

As we use more and more software on Windows PC’s, more power is required. Linux allows you to use the power of the PC more efficiently if not used for all your daily needs – perfect for that second laptop/desktop you were going to get rid of.

Pramnos has outlined more than a few options for you to do with your old PC:

  • Turn it into a dedicated firewall. You can use Linux’s own firewall, Smooth Wall, or Devil Linux.
  • Have it as a development Server, so much of your information can be easily accessed away from home.
  • Use it as a storage server. All your MP3 collections, photos and more can be backed up and kept on this second PC instead of taking up space and power on your main one.
  • A Media Center. If it is strong enough, hook it up in your living room to provide a library of movies and music for your entertainment.
  • A P2P download station. Again, instead of bogging down your daily computer with constant downloads, use the other one for this purpose. Actually, you can use apps like VNC to access your old computer through your main one and control your downloads.
  • For simple uses such as word processing or Internet surfing, there are Linux apps that can simplify the toll on the PC. Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux will help you with that.

For further instruction, examples and ideas, you can check out Pramnos page. While I do not use Linux, I have heard more than a few wonderful comments about the operating system.

Self Assembly Chair

Check out this video below…pretty cool technology. It may be a little weird, but I’m thinking (hoping) that this will teach us things….somehow. Maybe in the future our products will repair themselves if dropped or broken. I’m still trying to figure out how the inventor told his/her parents what their chosen career is – ‘Mom, Dad, I have some important news for you. I’ve invented a chair that assembles itself…’

Green for the Environment on Blog Action Day

It’s Blog Action Day! Today is a day where over 14,000 blogs have agreed to take part and write about one issue – Our Environment. While many would agree that this is an important cause, only true intentions would suffice.

We have recently read a wonderful post by Kate entitled “Going Green to Make Green”, where she discusses whether this ‘Green’ trend is just a fad. It seems that the essence of environmental awareness is truly valuable, but many overvalue it. A study by GFK Roper Consulting about environmental awareness confirms the previous statement by figures like the following:

Over 70% of respondents claim that the environment influences most of their commercial decisions, including where they shop, invest their money and more. 40% of Americans are willing to pay more for a product that is perceived to be better to the environment although 55% agree that most of these are not actually better. Furthermore 74% believe these products are too expensive and 61% believe they don’t work as well as others.

Instead of over evaluating, we believe in discussing and promoting products that are good for the environment AND practical and efficient for the everyday consumer. For a product to be beneficial, it should help the environment and the consumer simultaneously. In this situation, the individual will be prone to help and understand more.

There are many companies that produce tech products, consumer electronics and gadgets who are taking advantage of this Green hype and leveraging on the fact that as long as a ‘Green’ tag is within a product description or title, sales would increase. Are all the companies concerned about the environment or perhaps just ride on the bandwagon of this growing trend? Can we truly determine which products help the cause, and which are in it for the money?

We previously posted about USB-rechargeable batteries. While these are somewhat expensive, they are truly practical and environment-friendly. Moreover, in how to fight global-warming from your desktop , Local Cooling offers simple software which tracks your energy usage and proposes energy saving solutions that help you save money while helping the environment.

In order for something to truly receive the Green stamp it must answer to the “WIIFM” (What’s In It For Me). If it does so with the consumer, only then will it’s Green nature be perceived as an advantage over another less environment-friendly alternatives.

With so many electronics out there claiming they are for the Green Cause, we would like to hear about the ones that actually are. Only we as consumers can truly say which of our so-called environment friendly electronics we believe actually help us as well. Please let us know your opinions and thoughts about different ‘Green’ products, for we would like to write additional posts about them.
