Following the launch of the Vega Racer smartphone, Pantech has released the Vega No. 5, a smartphone/tablet hybrid that sports a beautiful 5″ screen.
This device comes at the heels of some other upcoming 5″ Android hybrids, including Samsung’s Galaxy S WiFi 5 which is up for pre-order. Dell’s sequel to the 5-inch Streak, the “Opus One”, is also due for a formal launch. With the release of the Vega No. 5, it’s safe to say that if there’s a market for smartphone/tablet hybrids, it will certainly be discovered in the near future.
The Vega No. 5 has some of the most impressive specs we’ve seen on a 5″ hybrid device. It packs a dual core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (MSM8x60), making it one of the fastest Android handsets available.
It centers around 800 x 480 5-inch display. While it’s not a Super AMOLED screen, the advanced LCD technology means you’ll find crisp colors and superb clarity on the large 5″ slate.
Other internals include 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and an 8MP rear camera + LED flash capable of 1080p video capture. The front of the device includes a front-facing camera for video chats and self portraits.
You’ll also find a SDHC card slot and telephony (“phone capabilities”), DLNA, DMB antenna, future NFC support.
All of this will run on top of Android Gingerbread 2.3, an operating system developed by Google that was designed to Android tablets. While the OS is optimized for larger tablets, the experience on this 5″ hybrid is likely to be excellent.
Pantech hasn’t been clear as to whether or not the Pantech Vega No. 5 will launch outside of Korea and China or not. However, the device is set to hit the Korean and Chinese markets late this month.
