Before that little red punk Elmo showed up and started scoring all the big interviews and plum assignments, Grover was the top fuzzy monster on Sesame Street. Times change, and any monster will tell you, life out on the Street can be hard. Out-hustled and out-cuted, Grover’s just another monster on the block.
That didn’t stop a California Grover fan from making this sweet Dancing Grover Robot. The fan, known online as “Bruce,” took a couple of servo-motors, some nylon and a Maestro servo control unit and added them to a Grover plush doll. After programming a few simple commands, he had Grover waving and walking. But then he got creative, and decided to give Grover the gift of dance. After a bit more programming, Bruce had Grover up and dancing to the hits of yesterday and today. In the first video, the little blue guy busts a move to that classic 80s one hit wonder “Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats:
But Grover isn’t just a retro groover. Bruce also has him cutting a rug to something a little more modern. This video has him getting down to “Feels Good Inc.” by the Gorillaz. It also gives you a pretty cool look at the servos at work.
Nice moves for a monster. If those videos weren’t enough, Bruce has also posted step-by-step instructions on how to make your own dancing Grover, complete with his own stage. It may take a little time and elbow grease to make your own, but it would be pretty cool to have Grover dancing up a storm whenever you turn on some tunes.
