What would the 3D cast of fighters in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 look like as two dimensional sprites? Steamboy33 provides us with the answer after the jump.
Like bowties on a certain time/space traveling alien, videogame sprites are cool. And they’re especially “cool” when they take on the guise of a modern gaming property, that graphically, is far away from the block-based art form to which our proud industry was built on, not to mention a series that at one period used sprites before turning to the cost-effective evils of 3D polygons.
Allow me then, to direct your attention to deviantART user steamboy33’s efforts to bring back a part of the past for one such example, the cross-over battle royal that takes you for a ride, Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom series. Here, steamboy33 has done an incredible job transforming the now current 3D character models of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 into sprite form, just like its predecessors before it.
Personally, when Capcom decided to drop sprites in favor of polygons for their roster of combatants in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, a spark of magic was lost… A Marvel vs. Capcom game just isn’t the same without them using that same, tired Morrigan (Darkstalkers) sprite for the thousandth time, but hey, that’s just cantankerous ole’ me. I guess that’s why I really dig this sprite work from steamboy33.
It definitely gives us a glimpse at what could have been for the fighting game series had it kept on its sprite-based path. Perhaps then, fans would have had one less thing to angrily complain about aside from extra content, like bonus characters, outfits, and what not, promoted as downloadable content, being truthfully locked away on-disc. Okay, likely not, but it probably wouldn’t have hurt.
