hdmyboy Connects Game Boy Classic to Modern Television Sets

It’s time to wipe the dust off your old Game Boy, as someone has come up with the brilliant idea of connecting it to TV sets via HDMI.

There are still people among us who think that a great story and a bazillion pixels don’t make a game great. Instead, they are going back again and again to the same old handheld game console that they used to play on 25 years ago. Nintendo’s Game Boy Classic is a piece of history, in terms of gaming consoles, so it’s understandable why someone wouldn’t let go of it or would enjoy going back to it, were there the means to play Game Boy titles in a more modern context.

Zane Amiralis and Joshua de Haan, the two guys who developed hdmyboy, described their product as follows:

“Last year Josh hacked a game boy classic so he could play it on an old computer monitor. By tapping into the digital signal deep within the game boy, he could generate amazingly crisp graphics. After playing some Mario, Tetris and Zelda we decided we just had to share this and take it to the next step.

So we spent the last 3 months building a prototype which supports full hd and makes it super easy for everyone to upgrade their game boys. Now it’s time to find out how many people would like one so we can do a production run! This year it is Game Boys 25th birthday, so see this as our last minute gift to the best classic handheld console!”

By the looks of it, Game Boy titles such as Pokemon, Tetris or Super Mario look really pixelated when displayed on an full HD TV. However, that’s part of the magic that represented playing games on this console. Plus, the ability to add a NES controller to the mix means that you can keep your eyes on the telly while playing, without having to plant your fingers on the console itself. This is definitely something that will appeal to Game Boy users, old and young!

hdmyboy is currently featured on Kickstarter, where its developers hope to raise €65,000 (about $77K) before December 26. If the funding goal is reached by then, anyone who pledged €115 as an early bird or €125 as a regular backer should expect to they their hdmyboy in April or May 2015.
