In general I like to think of myself as a bit of an old school gamer. I wouldn’t get into one of those silly arguments about who was here first that seems to perpetuate in most games I play, but I’ve been around for awhile.
Yet after watching this video on the insane console history, I see now that I am not nearly as old as I thought I was. Comforting, I suppose.
The story actually begins long before I was born in 1972 when the “Magnavox Odyssey” (lol what?!) was released, and it was apparently a big deal at the time. Since that “breakthrough” in home gaming, there now have been over 450 game consoles, a mere 38 years later. That’s a lot to be sure, but a more visual representation was compiled by a Eliot Hagen from Elder-Geek, and he attempts to document this rather extensive console history. I thought I knew most of the consoles that came before me but holy cow was I wrong!
Now I’m going to warn you, this isn’t the same video that you saw in the 2 minute quickfire compilation of Apple Computer history, but rather it runs a pretty lengthy 23 minutes. So pull up a chair, grab your favorite frosty beverage, and enjoy the music and the journey through the real old school times of gaming. I’ll just put it out there that if you do in fact remember all of the consoles featured in the video, then I salute you, and also you should probably go outside. Seriously, no one should know that much about consoles, ever.
