Can nothing be as cute as LittleBigPlanet? How about LittleBigPlanet redoing a trailer for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us? Judge for yourselves and see.
Naughty Dog’s survival epic The Last of Us is set 20 years after a devastating plague wipes out most of humanity, knocking down modern society as we know it to almost caveman-like levels, and leaving those who’ve survived in the post-apocalypse wake to fight desperately over the remains. Not quite the cute and plushy environment one would find Media Molecule’s munchkin avatars, Sackboy and his LittleBigPlanet friends.
Although as the Internet has shown us time and time again, it seems there’s nothing that little precocious mound-of-threads-and-buttons can’t make magically better. Sort of how any YouTube video is awesomely better when you play Guile’s theme from Street Fighter II in the background — wait? You’ve never seen that?! Double-time it over to Google and search “Guile’s theme makes everything better” after we’re done here. You won’t regret it.
Let’s return to the subject at hand: What is it this time that Sackboy has put his whimsical touches on thus creating an instant Internet sensation (well, to me and everyone else who champions LittleBigPlanet and splendid-ness till the cows come home), and what does it have to do with The Last of Us? Why, it’s this amusing trailer of The Last of Us redone using the LittleBigPlanet 2 engine.
The whole elaborate process of recreating The Last of Us trailer in LittleBigPlanet 2 took two weeks according to YouTube user TheClassicEvil – who I imagine is maniacally sitting in a large chair petting a white cat – but really it feels like it took much longer than that. Every moment-to-moment animation in the video near-perfectly matches up with its actual source, except oddly adorable.
I’m sure during all my extensive LittleBigPlanet playtime, I’ve never run over a dude with a pickup truck and then get assaulted by a band of gun-toting thieves… Perhaps that was a custom-made level I never came across before? Never mind that though, why don’t you check out the video for yourselves. It’s pretty amazing. Yes, I pretty much say that to everything on this website, but trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
