New Super Mario Bros. & Pikmin 3 Debuting At E3 2012

Confirmed by Nintendo, a new Super Mario Bros. game and Pikmin 3 will be waiting for us to see at this year’s E3.

Oh, the world of press can be a strange thing indeed. A recent Shigeru Miyamoto interview by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, caught the legendary gaming developer in admitting that a new Super Mario Bros. game would be revealed for the Nintendo Wii U at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.

Here’s the rub, though. Miyatmoto was never fully quoted himself in saying this; rather it was the El Mundo who came to that conclusion own their own behalf. After that major scoop was published, the website Eurogamer called out to Nintendo for a comment to the El Mundo story, which in return got them a surprising confirmation from a Nintendo spokesperson.

However the press wires got weirdly crossed, and whoever originally leaked the news, we definitely know now that a new Super Mario Bros. game will be announced at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles. And more importantly, for Nintendo’s upcoming new console with its touch-screen embedded controller, the Wii U.

Word on the street has it though, that Mario’s first outing for the Wii U won’t be a dramatic change in series, and well likely be based on a New Super Mario Bros. Wii-esque game that was demoed at E3 2011. May I direct your eyes to Exhibit A above, the header pic, as an example of what we might see at Nintendo’s E3 presser in two month’s time.

Hmm, this unnamed Super Mario Bros. title could certainly be that – or – knowing how fast Nintendo loves to quickly shake-up direction to their internal gaming projects, the design of this game could have moved well beyond what we see here.

Oh, and that’s probably for a game that’s been in development for two or three years. Think about a game like Pikmin 3, which has been talked about in frequent past conversations with Shigeru Miyamoto – and looky here – just recently got the E3 2012 confirmation from Nintendo.

The last Pikim game (Pikmin 2, obviously) was back in 2004, and at E3 2011, the popular real-time strategy game had been reportedly moved in development to the Nintendo Wii U. It going to be super interesting to see how Pikmin 3 looks in terms of graphics, and how it will use the Wii U’s new controller in game play interaction. Many fantastic uses, I’m sure.
