Pop culture rule of thumb: Release a major motion picture about a legendary superhero -and in this case, Norse deity to boot- and related memorabilia of all kinds (un)imaginable will soon come flooding. Most of it is bound to be overtly geeky, but this desk looks so smart and understated you probably wouldn’t guess it was conceived with “Thor” in mind.
The desk was developed by design studio Dror for Acura, Honda’s luxury brand. Marvel fans have probably already seen the movie enough times to pick up on the fact that it’s rife with various Acura models aboard which S.H.I.E.L.D. agents go fashionably a-cruising (including Agent Coulson played by Clark Gregg, who’d previously starred the same role in the Iron Man franchise. Holy tie-ins, god of thunder.)
The polished desktop measures 200″x70″ and, as expected, it has a finish akin to the Acura TL’s chassis. The best thing about it, however, are all the secret compartments. Not only is the desk inspired by the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents’ vehicle of choice, it’d also be fit for them to sit behind and carry out their top-security operations in style. There are drawers, hidden Bose speakers, an iPad/iPhone docking station … All essential items to enjoy the modern spy’s way of life.
The base is made of both graphite and lightwood, bearing the inscriptions “Acura” and “Thor”. This unlikely combination strikes me as particularly cool because it recalls both Thor’s millenary, divine origins (the wood immediately brings to mind the grip of Mjölnir, his powerful hammer) and the contrasting modern setting he finds himself inserted in after being exiled to Earth by Odin.
All in all, a fantastic work by Dror. It’d just need an accompanying manual on how to find the Bïfrost Bridge to be 100% perfect.
