No, we’re not talking about the movie, we’re talking about the Mexican holiday. Sure, it might be a bit macabre to have a skull birthday cake, but who cares when it was obviously made with a lot of time, love and care. Plus it doesn’t hurt that it’s pretty.
Designed by Debbie Goard, username debbiedoes cakes (a nice nod to that famous movie “Debbie Does Dallas”), this festive cake is enough to make anyone smile with that grinning skull. The design is inspired by the Mexican sugar skulls from the most famous holiday Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). These skulls represent the soul of a departed loved one and then placed in the home or gravestone as an offering. The varied decorations and bright coloration are used to both enhance to features of the skull and to make the celebration whimsical.
This cake does a great job of capturing the spirit of the sugar skulls in all its festivity. The bright colors and flower decorations detract from the potentially morbid skull as the centerpiece for the cake. It is both enjoyable to look at and probably delicious to eat as well. Despite all the colors and festiveness, this cake is definitely for some one who has a sense of humor. Not too many people would enjoy this cake in general, let alone for their birthday, it might hit a little too close to home.
Despite potential negative reactions to the cake, overall Goard does a great job of staying true to the Mexican sugar skull design while still incorporating her own flair to the idea. The flowers are a great tough to counterbalance the skull and the colors make the entire piece more vibrant and full of life. Hopefully, the cake is as delicious as it looks.
